?? Reflections on My Enriching Summer Internship with Janaagraha ?? Hello, I recently completed an enriching two-month summer internship at Janaagraha, which was a pivotal part of our curriculum at Urban Policy and Governance - TISS, Mumbai, diving into urban governance and public administration. Here’s a look at the impactful work I undertook: ?? Mapping Parastatals Across Indian States: I mapped parastatals in Assam, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, and Tripura. This involved analyzing each state’s administrative structure and parastatal bodies, honing my research skills and understanding diverse governance frameworks. ???? Exploring TSS Initiatives in Saskatchewan, Canada: I researched Targeted Sector Support (TSS) initiatives of Saskatchewan municipalities, comparing international governance models to the Indian context. I gained insights into how tailored support initiatives can enhance municipal performance and citizen engagement. ?? Analyzing CAG Report Data: I analyzed grade-wise vacancy and outsourced staff details from the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report. This task improved my data extraction and analysis skills, providing a clearer perspective on staffing challenges and inefficiencies within government bodies. ??? Documenting City Council Buildings: I curated images of city council buildings in India, focusing on both exterior and interior views. This task required research and aesthetic judgment, enhancing my appreciation for architectural styles and urban planning. ?? Studying Urban Governance Models in China: I delved into urban governance models of various states and cities in China. This study revealed innovative approaches China has adopted in urban management, offering potential lessons for Indian cities. ??Key Learnings and Takeaways: - Understanding the heterogeneity in governance structures across different regions. - The critical role of data accuracy and analysis in formulating effective public policies. - Comparing Indian governance models with international practices broadened my perspective. - Integrating political science, public administration, and urban planning is essential for addressing complex governance challenges. I extend heartfelt gratitude to our esteemed team leader and mentor, Priyanka Tibrewal, for her invaluable guidance and unwavering support. ??? Urbanization is reshaping our world, with 68% of the global population projected to live in cities by 2050, including an additional one billion people in Asia and the Pacific. However, this rapid urban growth has deepened inequalities, with over 700 million urban slum dwellers in Asia facing overcrowding, inadequate housing, and limited access to basic services. Tackling these challenges is vital to achieving ?????????????????????? ?????????????????????? ???????? ???? and building cities that are inclusive, resilient, and sustainable. ?? This summer, I had the privilege of contributing to the ?????????????? ???? ?????? ???????????? initiative during my internship at United Nations ESCAP. My work focused on applying machine learning to identify the demographic and socio-economic factors that make households more susceptible to living in slums across Cambodia, India, and the Philippines. These insights provide a foundation for designing inclusive policies that promote equality of opportunity across the region. All fellowships are valuable since they encourage the otherwise most overlooked manners of adult learning - learning by doing and learning by sharing and being paid for learning. While designing this fellowship, our team and partners ideated significantly to go beyond the learning and make it truly unique. Very happy to share some of those ideas , that are integrated in this fellowship: Diversity of objectives : This is one of the few fellowships that are geared towards social impact organisations in the urban space. While there are fellowships that are geared towards urban governance, they are mostly housed within the government agencies (CM fellowships, Smart Cities Fellowship). This fellowship will enable learning of programmatic approaches by organisations in the social impact space and learning of organisational development in this space. Diversity of mentorship: Being anchored by a network of organisations rather than one specific organisation means the fellows will have an access to a wealth of knowledge, that is both broad and deep. Each of the host organisations have years of experience working across policy, processes and service delivery across multiple sectors. This we hope, will build a systems understanding of cities and prepare better rounded professionals post the fellowship completion. Diversity of peers: The first cohort encourages civic leaders, mid career professionals and social entrepreneurs. By allowing these different pathways for fellow selection, the fellows will experience the richness of ideas within the same cohort, they will share with each other their unique lived experiences of Indian cities and their ideas of solving problems. In a true sense we are trying to bring civic leadership, private sector and social entrepreneurship within the same cohort and are excited to see the creativity that emerges from colliding ideas. Women have a unique understanding and experience of Indian cities.
