According to Meredith Belbin “A team is not a bunch of people with job titles, but a congregation of individuals, each of whom has a role that is understood by other members”. Over the last three years, I've been working with #projectteams from an industry leader in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) and marine dredging ecosystems, where I have seen this demonstrated first hand. During this period, the entity has undergone a merger with a petroleum construction engineering company. A perfect marriage of talent, experience and material resources to create the region’s leading integrated oil & gas and marine service EPC player, with a footprint across MENA and South Asia.? However, getting highly skilled and experienced individuals on both sides aligned to perform like a team and work towards the strategic objectives of the newly formed entity can be a challenge. If the transition is not managed well, this can even take years, while productivity (and profitability) suffers. #Leadership plays a key role in getting individuals to work “like a well-oiled machine” ???????????????? ?????????? – the most important and probably the toughest to do. Open and honest communication, addressing inappropriate behaviours and always being accountable for #teamperformance, are good places to start. Members need to know you have their back, no matter what. Creating an emotionally safe space (with no fear of ridicule), is key to gaining trust. ?????????????? ?????????????? – there can be no influence where there is no respect. A title does not ensure respect; is must be earned. A leader must be a role model, live their values and "walk the talk". ???????????????? ?????????? – transparency and clarity when assigning job responsibility (or SMART objectives) helps team members focus on what they need to deliver. If done well, it leaves little room for “politics” – in fact it encourages healthy competition. People bring their best game to work. ???????????????? ???????? – requires a high level of #emotionalintelligence, #effectivecommunication, #socialskills and #culturalcompetence. Maturity has little to do with age! Keeping everyone focused on the big picture, and not personal agendas, is a skill a leader must have. ?????????????? – accepting that once the team is performing, different members may take on the role of the “leader”, depending on the task at hand. Leadership may need to step into a coaching or mentoring role. This ability to adapt fast to a changing environment is key to high performance teams. The key message on the ground has to be: ???? ?????? ???? ????????, ????????????, ???????????????? ?? ?? So about two months ago a regional mining unit of one of our global clients reached out to the unit we did work for in South Africa and asked about OIM Consulting and how they experienced us. I was copied in on the reply. Wow I was blown away, I could not have said what we do better. Thought I should share it, since it gives such a good perspective of how we operate. So here it is! “The OIM Consulting program is to my knowledge unique in the industry and built on many years of experience in the supervisory development space. I have completed supervisory development type training early in my career and the glaring shortcoming is that it is always classroom based with unsupervised practical application. When it comes to behavioural improvement class-based theory translates poorly into actual changes in behaviour.? What sets OIM apart is the focus on behavioural coaching and constant engagement on the issues related to it within a workplace setting. Coaching that happens “live” inside a working environment is in my experience superior to any other form of training. Just look at what OIM has been able to achieve in terms of sustainable positive behaviours that support a complex operating environment.? OIM’s selection and training process for consultants are rigorous and in my experience the consultants understand mining, people, management operating systems (MOS), and the behaviours that support a healthy MOS very well. The consultants were easy to manage and flexible. They integrated easily into the working environment and were able to win the trust of the people they were coaching with ease. They were able to highlight blind spots, make recommendations, and implement these on the fly. I would argue that you get more than you scope and pay for.? If your challenges are people related, I would bet money that OIM will make a big difference if you invest the time and energy. It does require utmost management belief and support in this process to get the most out of it. Management took a real interest in their people and their development, and the results still show 5 years later.”?
