In Churchu,?Jharkhand, migration isn't viewed as a crisis but?as an opportunity and solution. Especially for Churchu's adivasi families. ? When men migrate to larger cities, women?seek work as construction workers in nearby districts or closer to their hometowns,?continuing caregiving roles. But there is a lesser-known story that often goes unnoticed and Neelam Besra tells it best, the journey of young girls or "?? ?? ????????" left behind as their families seek livelihood opportunities elsewhere. For girls in Churchu, the days begin much earlier, tending to younger siblings and taking on household chores. After household work, attending school isn't always easy; some walk up to 15 kilometers or rely on bicycles, as the remote location has only one high school. For those fortunate enough to reach high school, the path to further education becomes even more challenging.?Especially for those aspiring to attend college, located 35 kilometers away. As a result, many of them drop out and end up getting married at a younger age. Proximate leader Neelam Besra, the daughter of a single mother who faced similar challenges to the girls of Churchu, at a young age is helping shorten this distance for Churchu's girls. ? Early in life, Neelam took a different path, working as a daily wage earner for a long time before eventually securing her first funding opportunity for her non-profit Jharkhand Mahila Uthan. Neelam has partnered with 12 panchayats (local bodies at villages), trained 110 women participants and increased their participation in local decision-making. For years, I've been puzzled by the persistent categorization of NGOs into two camps: rights and advocacy or service delivery. This binary framework dominates development studies and shapes how we perceive, evaluate, and support nonprofits. Such a rigid classification oversimplifies the complex roles of many organizations, particularly community-based ones. These organizations often juggle several responsibilities, from running health camps to arranging for government entitlement applications and building community awareness. This categorization inadvertently creates a hierarchy favoring organizations with larger scale, immediate impact, and quantifiable results. However, development is a continuum. For instance, raising awareness about the Right to Education is essential for boosting school enrollment and scaling up teacher training. Similarly, understanding the Maternity Benefit Act is crucial for establishing creches at construction sites. Social impact cannot be attributed to funders, non-profit organizations, corporations, or governments. It is a process with a diversity of efforts and multiple variables. Most importantly, it is the agency of communities to drive change. Agency here means the ability to understand power dynamics and change the status quo. A recent field visit to Kolkata triggered this reflection in my mind. I met a few organizations working with the LGBTQIA+ community. Their work included undertaking research and advocacy to increase visibility within legal bounds, supporting community members with TG certificates, to supplying better health and education services locally. When organizations are working with historically marginalized communities and limited resources - the focus and theory of change is 'everything, everywhere, all at once.' We need to expand our thought process with the same flexibility and agility with which many such non-profits are operating. What do you think about the categorizing NGOs based on their primary focus?
