#EUDataActSeries: Breaking Down Vendor Lock-In and the Business Implications for Connected Product Manufacturers When it comes to the EU Data Act, one of the most business-critical and complex prescriptions is the push to eliminate vendor lock-in. Let’s talk about what this means for manufacturers of connected products—and why getting this right is both a challenge and an opportunity. Understanding the Prescription: The EU Data Act requires that connected product ecosystems do not restrict users from switching providers or transferring their data. The intent is clear: empower consumers and foster a competitive market. This means that the days of locking users into proprietary ecosystems are numbered. Manufacturers are now responsible for ensuring their products can interact with diverse systems and data can move freely across platforms. ?????? ???????????????? ????????????????????????????????: ???? ????????????, ?????????????????????????? ????????: ? Design products and services that are compatible with open standards. ? Provide mechanisms for easy data export and transfer, without proprietary barriers. ? Ensure that integration with third-party services is seamless and does not restrict consumer choice. ?????? ???????? ?????? ???????? ???? ?????????????????? ???????? ????????????????????: ? Pros: Moving towards an open ecosystem can drive innovation, as manufacturers can integrate with other platforms more easily. It also positions companies as consumer-friendly and forward-thinking, potentially gaining a competitive edge in a market increasingly driven by transparency and user choice. ? Cons: The initial transition to open systems can be costly and complex. It may require significant architectural overhauls and new investments in interoperability. Moreover, in the short term, this could erode some existing competitive advantages built on exclusivity. A Strategic Balancing Act: The reality is that this is one of the most nuanced and difficult aspects of the EU Data Act. It will take years to fully interpret and implement correctly, and the business landscape will shift as regulators and companies work to define “fair” and “open.” The challenge is not just in technical implementation but in strategic alignment: How do you maintain a competitive edge while adhering to open standards? International Call Centre utilises infoboss to massively reduce inbound call demand. A multi-national company faced significant challenges with its existing web portal. The portal, which provided clients with case information, accessed the legacy application database directly. This setup not only increased the overhead on the legacy system but also led to a high volume of inbound enquiry calls, affecting the efficiency of the company’s operations. The company needed a new solution that could provide up-to-date information to clients, significantly reduce inbound calls, and ensure high performance and security. The database is your source of truth. Many companies quickly add new features to attract and retain users. However, compromising your core data for new functionality can lead to significant losses for your business. Consider this scenario: Your platform rewards users with points for purchases, which they can redeem later. If you introduce a feature that makes redeeming points easier, but it fails to update crucial data points, problems arise. When discrepancies in points occur and users seek help, your business can't verify or resolve these issues due to compromised data integrity. The implications are far-reaching. Not only does it require significant resources to address each issue, but as your user base grows, these problems can multiply, overwhelming your support services and leading to a database that no longer serves as a reliable source of truth. When users repeatedly face issues that aren't promptly and accurately resolved, their trust in your platform diminishes. This lack of trust can lead to frustration and dissatisfaction, prompting users to look for alternative services where they feel their needs and concerns are better addressed. Maintaining data integrity and consistency isn't just about preventing operational inefficiencies; it's crucial for preserving user loyalty and trust, which are the cornerstones of a successful and sustainable business. While it’s important to innovate and release new features swiftly to stay competitive, make sure this urgency does not compromise the very foundation of your business—trust. Losing user loyalty is not just about losing revenue; it's about losing your valued customers' confidence in your service. #DataIntegrity #UserTrust #TechInnovation #DataConsistency #CustomerLoyalty #BusinessGrowth #TechLeadership #DataManagement #DigitalTransformation #ReliableData

Have you heard of "composability"? This approach, highlighted by Gartner in 2020, involves creating tech stacks with modular, interoperable software. It’s a game-changer for modern businesses, but misconceptions abound, especially around Customer Data Platforms (CDPs) like Twilio Segment. This is such a great summary from the WAV Group. If you are on the board of an MLS or Association, understanding this is so important, so take a few minutes to read it. We see time and time again the frustration our prospective customers face when they start to evaluate the resources it takes for them to launch a single tech tool across multiple markets due to fragmentation and non-standardization. I often wonder, why does the industry continue to let this happen? Are the AoRs and MLSs hearing about these issues affecting their brokers? I recently heard a broker mention their frustration with launching technology to all of their agents who spanned multiple markets; having to obtain multiple MLS feeds, pay the costs for each feed separately, having the mapping and ingestion work done multiple times, and even after all that, the data from each is different. If you're a broker in this situation, my question for you is: what have you done about this? Does your MLS or Association know how this impacts you? As Victor Lund says in this article, "voice your opinion at your local MLS." And if you're a MLS or Association board member, have a conversation with your brokers' technology staff about how this affects them and, most importantly, the agents. https://lnkd.in/ggbUFSiw

At Unboxed, we’ve been talking about the blueprint for modern digital government which was published earlier this week. It was encouraging to see momentum gaining behind many of the ideas that we have been talking about and putting into practice for the past few years. One area of focus in the paper is the barrier to progress that arises from lack of data interoperability between government departments - or even teams within the same department. The blueprint states: “More widely, our data infrastructure remains fragmented, preventing the delivery of more joined-up, personalised services, and making it harder to realise efficiencies through improved productivity and reduced fraud and waste” and goes on to emphasise: “Siloed data continues to hinder collaboration. Data sharing between and within organisations, even after recent legislative changes and sustained effort, is high friction.” Data interoperability is something we have always been passionate about at Unboxed. Last year, Unboxed developer Ben Baumann spoke about how we have implemented a public API for the Back Office Planning system to enhance transparency, efficiency, innovation and community engagement in the planning process - and how we were also able to build a proof-of-concept map that consumes this API to show planning applications in people’s local areas. This is a great example of the idea in the blueprint that more organisations across all sectors will be able to link their products and services directly with digital public services or data sets Other than where data is confidential, allowing access to information about public services and our built environment is crucial for a thriving democracy. Often this transparency is lacking because organisations fail to adhere to common standards, or to publicise their data sets rather than because of an inherent desire for secrecy. Another great example is the UK Government’s e-petitions site, developed with Unboxed, which makes available real-time data about petition subjects and signatures. Making such important information transparent and presenting it in a standard format where anyone can visualise it is an important democratic tool. According to the blueprint, such transparency is at the heart of their plans for digital government, as the paper states they aim to: “Mandate the publication of a standard set of APIs and events by public sector organisations. Starting with an expectation that every new service in central government departments will have an open API.” We at Unboxed are happy to see such a great focus on data standards and interoperability, and look forward to continuing to be part of this process.
