Here is an overview of the lecture: Using ammonia as a fuel for internal combustion marine engines could help to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping. LEC is working with industry partners to overcome?the challenges in practical applications. Together with OMT SpA, we are investigating OMT’s newly developed injector prototype in our single cylinder research engine. The use of high-pressure liquid ammonia injection has the potential to reduce several harmful emissions - nitric oxide and unburned ammonia in particular. Nicole Wermuth is presenting the findings of the test campaign, applying different fuel injection strategies, injection nozzles and operating parameters and their impact on engine combustion performance and emissions. ?? As the automotive industry transitions toward more sustainable emissions products in response to climate change, the exploration of new cooling agents for motor vehicle air conditioning (MVAC) systems, including mildly flammable refrigerants, is gaining traction. However, the absence of applicable standards for devices that could test the flammability and safety of these new refrigerants in simulations of real-world conditions is a significant challenge for manufacturers. At the 2024 ASHRAE Annual Conference, Exponent’s Daniel Jaimes, Ph.D., P.E., CFEI, will present a paper co-authored with Amir Jokar, Ph.D., P.E., CFEI, titled “New Developments on Investigating the Ignition Propensity of Mildly Flammable Refrigerants.” In his talk, Dr. Jaimes will discuss a specialized apparatus designed and constructed to address this issue, as well as the pros, cons, and potential challenges of various flammability test methods.
