Last week saw our brilliant Young Innovators pitch their practical sustainability initiative to a panel of judges at UCL’s hub for innovation and entrepreneurship. Over the last seven months, Malvin Gonzales, Tristan Lee and Liam McMahon have been developing a company-specific idea aligned with our Sustainable Development Goals #SDGs as part of the UN Global Compact Network UK’s SDG Accelerator programme for Young Innovators. Their project focused on redistributing hundreds of thousands of medical devices, currently being wasted, to individuals around the world who struggle to access them. Tristan Lee, Strategy and Insights Analyst, commented on his participation in the programme; “It was a privilege to present our initiative to the UN Global Compact team, alongside other forward-thinking companies. The programme has been incredibly thought-provoking, deepening my understanding of the SDGs and how we, as young professionals, can drive meaningful change within our organisations.” Janet Fairlie-Vogt, Eakin Healthcare's Chief Development Officer and Young Innovator Team Champion, said; “Blown away by how inspired this team are to make a difference to people with a stoma and drive a positive solution from a waste challenge. Fond memories as I look back on ImpactFest 2024 last Thursday, Europe’s leading impact event. Big thank you for the great conversation to my co-panelists Dora Chi Xu, René van Geer and Agnes Weber, gracefully guided by Ikenna Azuike. We touched upon topics such as the impact and importance of local initiatives on the global circular economy, behavioural change and the role of the private sector in circular practices. Personally and from a CircuLaw perspective, I found the discussion on the role of public policy and legislation particularly interesting. The message I aimed to convey to the room full of impact entrepreneurs was this: when it comes to regulation, don’t just concentrate on the obstacles. It’s equally important to identify the norms, standards, and criteria that governments should implement to give your business a leading advantage—particularly since your circular product or service already complies, offering a competitive edge over more traditional, ‘linear’ companies. Organise yourselves as a strong, unified collective, stay informed about upcoming legislation, and engage in strategic lobbying. Together, you can counter established lobbying interests and ensure that new regulations include the right requirements. ?? How do we save the planet? ?? ?? Last week, I attended the Collective Impact Summit hosted by PHINEO Startups to try and find out! I watched their Accelerator Pitch Event and heard their fantastic keynote talks on Forests of Tomorrow and Rethinking Forests: Science, Practice, and Policy in Dialogue. Here are my top 3 takeaways that every changemaker should know: 1?? Partnerships are Key to Lasting Change We can’t solve society’s biggest challenges alone. Corporates, NGOs, startups, and investors all need to work together to create meaningful and lasting change. It’s only by leveraging the unique strengths of each sector that we can drive forward solutions that benefit people and the planet. 2?? Funding for Environmental Impact The panel Rethinking Forests: Science and Practice in Dialogue – featuring Dr. Jennifer Schulz, Susanne Roennefarth, Gabriel von dem Bussche, and Ole Seidenberg – highlighted the critical need for patient capital in supporting startups that positively impact nature and the environment. Thoughtful investment is essential to give these initiatives the runway to grow and make a difference. 3?? Strength in Community The Summit showcased the power of a collaborative approach to tackling complex issues, from climate to displacement to democratic resilience. The community atmosphere at Impact Hub Berlin emphasized just how essential collective action is in addressing today’s interconnected crises. ?? Lia Carlucci ??emphasised on the importance of an inspiring ecosystem, fostering collaboration and growth in sustainable food systems. One thought-provoking topic was the authority gap—the often unseen bias women in #leadership face, where their expertise is questioned or overlooked.
