Compassion for the homeless This morning, I had the privilege of helping out at Truro Homeless Action Group for Veggie Friday, alongside the brilliant Nigel Unwin and Sarah Wetherill. It’s always heartening to see familiar faces and be part of something that makes a tangible difference in the community. Every morning, the team of volunteers provide a cooked breakfast to those in need - a small gesture, but one that means so much. Whilst serving today, I had the chance to hear Nigel’s inspiring vision for his CIC, Garden Share - which aims at maintaining volunteered gardens in the community and the plan going forward is to grow enough local food to help feed those in need. His determination to create sustainable change is truly inspiring. At the breakfast club today, we welcomed a mix of clients. One gentleman came in soaking wet, his sleeping bag and clothes drenched, yet he remained in good spirits. Another arrived stressed after liquids spilt in his rucksack, but found a moment of respite with us. Many came into the kitchen to personally thank us, their vulnerability and gratitude shining through. It was humbling to witness. Moments like these remind me that we must approach others with compassion, even when they’re angry or frustrated. Sometimes, their actions reflect the immense challenges they face rather than who they are. A bit of understanding, a kind word, or simply listening can make an enormous difference to someone at their lowest. For most of us, having a roof over our heads is something we take for granted. Let’s practise gratitude for what we have and reserve judgement for those who don’t. You never know the battles someone might be fighting. If we all extend a little more compassion, imagine how much brighter the world could be. #Compassion #Community #Gratitude #TruroHomelessActionGroup #endingfoodpoverty #volunteers

Today felt like the perfect time to jump back into LinkedIn. The last 10-12 months have been quite a journey both personally and professionally. This post isn't meant to relive the last year but to encourage everyone that when your life is turned upside down unexpectedly, it can lead to wonderful outcomes. I found through prayer, reflection, and unwavering support from friends and family, what was initially something extraordinarily difficult became a true blessing. Some will notice I have a "gap" in my work history now. About 4 months. 4 months to jettison a lot of baggage, get my mind and body back to neutral (thank you Brendan Ferns for recommending Getting to Neutral by Trevor Moawad), and to dream again. 4 months to reconnect with my wife and start to make decisions that are focused on me and my family first, not what a job might dictate or require. Call it a gap or a sabbatical or whatever you'd like; I knew in order to be the best for my family and for wherever I chose to go professionally, I had to reset. In October of 2023 I got to meet with some of the team at Grubb Ventures. I wasn't sure if I was ready to come off the sidelines yet. Was I mentally ready? Did I complete my "factory reset?" A few things were clear that were critical to me: 1. The leaders truly cared about the people there. It wasn't lip service or just some core value splattered on a wall. 2. They believed the company was ready to make smart, strategic changes in response to recent growth (I like leading through change believe or not). 3. Grubb cares about the community they live and work in. I joined Grubb as its CFO in November (I know I'm late posting about it). And today we sorted and packed eggs at the Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC. We did it together. Just like we do each day at the office. I'm so thankful to the team at Grubb for choosing me. I'm grateful to everyone who supported me this last year, especially my wife and family. And while I know God doesn't ever have to reveal His plan for me, I'm blessed that He continues to orient my steps.
Volunteering in our community is one of the many ways?#GVgivesback. This week, the Grubb Ventures team spent a busy morning at the?Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC?helping sort and package 7,000lbs of locally sourced eggs to share with over 500,000 members of our underserved communities in Central and Eastern North Carolina. #team?#community

There are nine days left until Christmas and the holiday season is a powerful reminder that the most meaningful gifts often require sacrifice. True generosity isn’t about the size of the gift but the willingness to put others’ needs and happiness ahead of our own. Whether it’s giving time, energy, or resources, the act of giving from a place of selflessness creates lasting impact. I regularly donate to causes that make a direct impact in the lives of the less fortunate. Loaves and Fishes in Clarksville, TN is a organization that feeds the homeless of our community. It’s a organization open everyday except Sunday throughout the entire year. There is no judgement, no questions, just food and space. Citizens, businesses, volunteers, and church organizations sacrifice their supplies, time, and money to keep this place buzzing. In our professional lives, we have daily opportunities to embrace this mindset. It could be offering mentorship or support to a colleague by sharing your expertise or simply being present for someone who needs encouragement. These moments of sacrificial generosity, when we set aside our own priorities to help others, strengthen connections and foster trust in our teams. This season, let’s focus on giving in a way that makes a difference. When we dedicate ourselves to the joy or success of others, we not only enrich their lives but also create a ripple effect of positivity and growth. #Generosity #Leadership #WorkplaceCulture https://lnkd.in/gB2uAuJe

Canada produces an impressive amount of food annually, with field crops alone accounting for around 94.4 million metric tonnes in the past year. Almost half of that - 46.5% - is wasted, with 11.2 million metric tonnes of this waste being avoidable. This waste also contributes approximately 25.7 million metric tonnes of CO? emissions each year. That’s about 253,000 flights between Toronto and Vancouver. Organizations like Second Harvest are addressing this issue by rescuing surplus food and redistributing it to communities in need. Learn how you can help reduce waste by donating surplus food or supporting their efforts: https://lnkd.in/g_kNg5mj
At CI Financial, we’re not just about building financial futures—we’re about building stronger communities too. Recently, an incredible group of our employees volunteered with Second Harvest, sorting 7,500 lbs of surplus food to support Canadians facing food insecurity. This hands-on experience was a powerful reminder of the impact we can make when we come together to give back. A heartfelt thank you to Second Harvest for the opportunity to contribute and to our amazing team for their passion, dedication, and generosity. #LifeAtCI #CIFinancial #Volunteering #SecondHarvest #CommunityImpact

More than 800 square metres of VicTrack-owned land in the heart of Brunswick has been transformed into a high production urban farm, where The Big Umbrella Foundation grows?fresh produce to go into 700 meals served to people experiencing food insecurity or homelessness each week. The farm was made possible through a VicTrack community lease that enables The Big Umbrella Foundation to put the previously underused railway land to good use – bringing our assets to life. Watch The Big Umbrella Foundation’s Victoria Wilson explain how their long-term partnership with VicTrack is bringing real benefit to people who need it. Earlier this year a team of our employees pitched in to prepare meals at The Big Umbrella Foundation’s Brunswick Emergency Food Relief Centre and served them at Federation Square as part of the Big Umbrella Foundation’s corporate volunteering program. We support our people to give back to the community by providing five days of volunteer leave each year. By helping others, volunteers also help themselves. Not only are volunteers the lifeblood of our schools and shelters, hospitals and hotlines, food banks, and civic, nonprofit, tribal, and faith-based organizations across the country, but they are also essential to our nation's economic and social well-being. @AmeriCorps and @uscensusbureau's latest Volunteering and Civic Life in America research found that with more than 4.99 billion hours committed to service, volunteers make a difference in their communities while earning benefits such as hands-on experience, learning new skills, and more.
