?? Exciting CCS news! On June 26th, the Austrian Federal Government unveiled its national carbon management strategy, marking a significant step forward for carbon management technologies in the country. Jointly led by Austria’s federal Ministry of Finance (BMF) and the federal Ministry for Climate Action (BMK), the strategy focuses on CCS, CCU, and CDR to address residual emissions from hard-to-abate industries, helping Austria meet its climate goals. To support the strategy further, the government has made several recommendations including: ?? Enhancing international cooperation and developing technical standards. ??Lifting the ban on CO2 geological storage and aligning with the EU CCS Directive. ??Adapting the legal framework for CO2 transport via pipeline Austria now joins France and Germany in being the latest country in Europe to develop a dedicated national carbon management strategies ?? ENERGY ? Decarbonisation and energy security considerations are driving policymakers to increase their focus on developing carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) value chains. Projects and ventures proliferate in the UK, Italy and the Netherlands, but it can be hard for market players to keep apace in such a rapidly evolving regulatory framework. Our Giovanna Zagaria, member of the Infrastructure, Energy & Ecological Transition Focus Team, Elisa De Giuli and Andrea Sepe co-authored a guide with our Best Friends network – Bredin Prat, De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, Hengeler Mueller, Slaughter and May, and Uría Menéndez – on the status of the European CCUS sector and the regulatory landscape across seven jurisdictions. In the heart of Alberta, a debate simmers on the future of carbon capture and storage (CCS) technologies, particularly around how they intersect with the rights and lands of First Nations communities. With Canada's push towards carbon neutrality by 2050, the role of indigenous voices in shaping environmental policies and technologies has never been more critical. Alberta's First Nations are seeking clarity and involvement in the deployment of CCS projects, emphasizing the need for: - Transparent communication from corporations and government bodies. - Inclusion in the planning and decision-making processes. - Assurance that their lands and rights will be respected and protected. As we navigate the complex path towards a sustainable future, the integration of indigenous knowledge and perspectives into CCS initiatives is not just beneficial but essential. It represents a broader call for inclusivity and respect in environmental policy-making. This scenario raises pivotal questions about the balance between technological advancement and cultural heritage, about the right of communities to shape their own futures in the face of global challenges. What are your thoughts on how we can better integrate First Nations' perspectives into the development and implementation of green technologies? Let's discuss. CLAYBURN SERVICES LTD.

With the #ICMForum now taking place, we, along with other civil society groups are raising concerns over the EU’s Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) plans and fossil fuel industry influence. Despite overwhelming evidence showing Carbon Capture and Storage as costly, complex, and ineffective, the Carbon Capture industry continues to shape the EU policy agenda. We can’t let the fossil fuel industry's false solutions delay and distract from the EU’s desperately needed full and fair phase-out of fossil fuels. Are you a Canadian non-profit or charitable organization that has a community-based greenhouse gas emissions reduction project in need of additional capital to achieve your intended results? Now in its third year, Carbonzero (Canada) Micro Grant supports Canadian communities by providing financial assistance to eligible organizations that have ambitious and feasible GHG emissions reduction projects that not only reduce GHG emissions but introduce social benefits into communities as well. We were thrilled to be the recipients of this over the past year to expand the Biosphere Institute of the Bow Valley's Towards Zero Waste Event Strategy! The grant funding has been used to implement waste diversion initiatives at events in the Bow Valley, allowing for waste emissions reductions of 67% and 81% compared to a landfill-only waste scenario at the Alberta World Cup and the BMW IBU Biathlon, respectively. Throughout the general election, The Labour Party made their support for the Carbon Capture and Storage industry very clear within their manifesto. One of the ways they portrayed this, was through promising an additional £1bn under their National Wealth Fund. The dedication and investment into this industry, is imperative right now, as the CCUS industry is almost at the point where it could soon be deploying projects throughout the UK’s industrial heartlands at scale. The article below talks about the renewed commitment to the CCUS industry the Labour Government is bringing in. This commitment highlights how important the industry is and how integral to multiple parties it is to keep pushing this industry forwards and developing it further. ???On Wednesday, ERCST hosted the Stakeholder consultation “CO? Storage Beyond the EU: Regulatory Barriers and Business Opportunities”. The Highlights: ??The storage of #CO2 outside the EU is complicated by the absence of a unified regulatory framework that matches the EU's stringent standards for carbon capture and storage. The #CCS Directive within the EU provides a clear legal framework for safe geological storage, but this does not extend beyond EU borders. ??The UK's exit from the #EU has added another layer of complexity, especially for projects involving the North Sea, which is a key area for potential CO2 storage. The need for regulatory changes to accommodate cross-border CO2 transport and storage has been highlighted, as the regulatory environment has shifted, potentially disrupting previous cooperative frameworks. "Leveraging storage potential outside the EU for CO2 storage is essential for effective #climate mitigation, given the relatively limited suitable sites within Europe and the need for regulatory coherence", said Andrei Marcu, Executive Director of ERCST. There was an exchange of views with experts that presented their views and expanded on key issues, setting the scene for an in-depth discussion: ??Andrei Marcu, ERCST ??Andrew Russell, UK Department for Energy Security and Net Zero ??Erika Laajalahti, The Bioenergy Association of Finland ??Stig Svenningsen, Norwegian Ministry of Energy ??Daniele D'Angelo, Eni ??Marino Varricchio, ERCST ???Stay informed about our upcoming events??????t.ly/ya6OM
