Today marks the kickoff of #COP29 ???? There are many decisions to be made, agreements to be reached, and, above all, substantial scientific evidence to consider as the foundation for responsible actions toward climate resilience and decarbonization ?? ?? Civil society, professionals, and citizens around the world are looking to #Baku with great hope. Decisions regarding the Article 6 implementation as well as the NCQG (New collective quantified goal) on climate finance are key outputs needed to be achieved. Based on modeled projections according to the United Nations Global Policy Model (UN GPM),?developing countries require around $1.1 trillion for climate finance from 2025, rising to around $1.8 trillion by 2030. I am confident that there is a growing sense of willingness and commitment among decision-makers to steer nations onto a more responsible path—one that prioritizes humanity, our planet, and those most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. "Last night, Parties agreed strong standards for a centralized carbon market under the UN," said Stiell. "There’s more work to do, but this is a good start – the product of over 10 years of work within the process. . . When operational, these carbon markets will help countries implement their climate plans faster and cheaper, driving down emissions. Science for action: an example from the Emissions & Adaptation Gap Reports ?? ? With UN Climate Change COP29 starting this week, we draw your attention to the findings from the Emissions Gap Report 2024 ?? , which was recently published by UN Environment Programme. This report finds that ambition and action to address ever-rising greenhouse gas emissions must be significantly increased ??in the next round of NDCs under the Paris Agreement. Otherwise, it’ll be impossible to reach this agreement’s 1.5°C goal??? .In 2023, GHG emissions set a new record of 57.1 GtCo2e. This increase was larger than the average increase in the decade preceding COVID-19. What’s more, countries are still off track to deliver on the globally insufficient 2030 NDCs. The emissions gap remains large and virtually unchanged from last year. However, the good news is that there is significant sectoral mitigation potential to bridge the emissions gap, but in order to capitulate on this potential, we need to move further and faster, together. ?? ? In addition, UNEP launched the Adaptation Gap Report 2024 last week. This report has similar findings: countries must ramp up implementation to prepare for mounting climate impacts. ?? Even though adaptation actions are largely on an upward trend, the pace of implementation is slow: the adequacy and effectiveness of national adaptation response is still insufficient to close the adaptation gap. ?? The reports finds that we must increase adaptation finance to bridge the finance gap, strengthen capacity-building and technology transfer to mobilize capacities, and enhance adaptation planning and implementation efforts to meet the global goal on adaptation. ?? ? The science is clear: we must do more, urgently, to keep our common climate goals in sight. ?? This is what efforts at UNFCCC COP29 will be directed at, and scientific findings like the ones coming from the Emissions & Adaptation Gap Reports provide key policy input in this regard. Today at the COP29 Azerbaijan event on climate scenarios, #C3S director Carlo Buontempo highlighted that the near real-time production of climate data has attracted new attention and audiences who are asking interesting questions, e.g., about the #Honga-Tonga effect, the reasons for the sharp rise in #CH4, and the role of shipping #aerosols. ? Buontempo explained that the current setup, characterised by a long production cycle of climate data over several years, is not well suited to answer these kinds of questions. He argued that climate science and services need to change to provide more salient and actionable information on climate in support of rapidly changing policy landscape and societal interests.? ?? The event was organised by the CMCC Foundation - Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici, Università Ca' Foscari Venezia and the Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE). ??
