Here's some advice for website owners struggling to recover a website that has lost traffic. I received many DMs after I published my last case study, where I hit 538K organic clicks in just 7 months by publishing only 57 high-quality semantic articles. (using Koray Tugberk GUBUR's framework) 90% of the people asked me how they can recover their website, which got hit during: ?? The 2023 HCU update ?? The March 2024 core update ?? Or the recent August 2024 core update Not all websites are affected for the same reasons, but I’ve found some common patterns among almost all the sites I analyzed. ?? Lack of proper brand identity signals (source context) by not effectively reflecting the brand’s attributes in the site-wide N-grams and the macro context of the website. ?? Poor macro context of the website (central search intent). ?? Covering random topics without proper information architecture (topical map), often focusing solely on search demand or reverse-engineering competitors. ?? Poorly structured information architecture (topical map), lacking organization, labeling, and structure, which reduces usability and discoverability. ?? Poor micro-semantics: too much fluff, unnecessary sentences, basic information structures, limited media, and hard-to-understand content. ?? Technical SEO issues, especially during migrations or relaunches (e.g., broken links, redirect chains, incorrect canonical tags, long load times, etc.). Before we move toward solutions, remember one thing. ? “Information architecture is one of the most crucial elements for helping both customers and Google navigate and understand the source effectively.” Let’s talk about the steps I normally recommend website owners to recover a hit domain. First of all, don’t worry if your site has its own product or service. Google prioritizes websites that provide real value to users beyond mere information consumption. Here’s how I recommend approaching recovery: ?? 1/ Audit content/sitemap for the whole website (top-level) 2/ Develop corporate/foundational pages 2.1/ Create at least 2-3 real author pages semantically 3/ Build a semantic map of essential topics. 4/ Reconfigure existing pages according to the new framework. 5/ Create and publish content from the topical map. 5.1/ Develop semantic content briefs for topical map nodes. 5.2/ Write semantic content for the topical map nodes. ?? During this process, I continuously monitor data in Google Search Console to track how Google evaluates the website. I use this data to fine-tune the strategy and ensure that the client maximizes their investment and benefits from the project. Having trouble recovering your website's traffic after recent updates?
