Before-and-After Sentinel-1 Imagery from ESRI’s Sentinel Explorer Reveals the Devastating Flooding in Spain (October 30, 2024): Spain is grappling with its worst flooding in decades as relentless torrential rains have struck the eastern province of Valencia. The crisis has led to a rising death toll and numerous reports of missing individuals, underscoring the disaster's severity. In the Chica region of Valencia alone, a staggering 491 liters per square meter of rainfall was recorded within just eight hours. The widespread flooding has left communities reeling, with homes submerged, vehicles swept away, and bridges destroyed, presenting severe challenges for residents and local authorities. #SpainFloods2024 #Sentinel1-Imagery #ESRISentinelExplorer #ValenciaFlooding #HistoricRainsInSpain #FloodDisasterAnalysis #RemoteSensingforFloods #Before-and-After Satellite Images #FloodAnalysis #NaturalDisasterMonitoring #ClimateImpact

???? Flooding in Cadaqués: A Call for #Water Resilience ???? Just a week after the devastating #DANA storm hit Valencia, Cadaqués (Girona - Spain) is now facing its own #flood crisis. This highlights the increasing frequency of extreme weather events affecting our communities. ??? The DANA brought Valencia over 500 mm of rain, severely impacting areas still in recovery. In Cadaqués, heavy rains caused rivers and streams to overflow, #flooding streets and homes, and damaging local infrastructure. The response from emergency services has been critical, with evacuations and rescues to ensure public safety. Events like these emphasize the need for resilient water infrastructure and efficient drainage systems that anticipate future climate challenges. As a #waterengineer, I strongly believe each project must prioritize the protection and well-being of the communities we serve. ? This is a call to action across all sectors: we need sustainable solutions, responsible urban planning, and above all, collaboration between authorities, professionals, and communities to build a safer future. ?? ?? The recent flooding in Spain’s #Valencia region is one of the country’s most devastating and deadly extreme weather events to date. The Iberian Peninsula has long faced a high risk of?flash floods, particularly in combination with the current Mediterranean low-pressure system. In the past 50 years, two of Spain's most significant #flood events occurred in the Spanish East coast – and both within just the last five years (2019, 2021). Remarkably, these past events produced only about half the accumulated rainfall compared to what we've seen this time around.?The devastation we’re witnessing underscores the critical need for risk-aware planning in urban development. While the full extent of this event continues to be assessed, it stands as a tragic reminder of the urgent need for stronger flood resilience. Preparing metropolitan areas for the changing risks of severe weather is more vital than ever to protect lives and communities.

DAY 9??5?? / 1??0??0?? Today's focus is on how Town Planning can be strategically utilized to manage and mitigate flood risks. ????? ?? *Flood Zone Mapping*: Identifying and marking flood-prone areas as official flood zones can limit development, helping ensure only suitable infrastructure is built, thereby minimizing flood damage. ?? *Protective Barriers*: Constructing levees and floodwalls around coastal areas serves as a physical shield. It prevents floodwaters from reaching populated or vulnerable areas. ?? *Wetland Development*: Creating or conserving wetlands helps prevent flooding by absorbing and slowing down stormwater flow. It reduces the impact of floodwaters while supporting biodiversity. ???? #FloodManagement #TownPlanning #ClimateResilience #SustainableCities #UrbanPlanning #FloodPrevention #WetlandConservation #EcoFriendlyInfrastructure #DisasterPreparedness #GreenInfrastructure

I was recently interviewed by The Olive Press Newspaper in Spain about the devastating floods in #Valencia, and one key point I emphasized is that due to increasingly intense rainfall events, most homes are now at risk of flooding. Many people believe that if they do not live near water, they are safe—but that is no longer the case. This is as true here in Canada as it is in Spain. At the home level, residents can take simple steps to protect their property. Cleaning out gutters, directing downspouts away from the house, or adding a rain garden to absorb excess water can make a big difference. At the broader landscape level, we need better urban planning, upgraded infrastructure, and the implementation of nature-based solutions to address these growing risks effectively. Flooding is not just a personal problem; it is a societal one. With a mix of individual actions and collective efforts, we can adapt to these challenges and build safer, more resilient communities. #Watersquare Benthemplein Rotterdam, Netherlands holds a twofold strategy. It serves as a public place for recreation as well as a storm water storage. We need more of such structures to make our cities livable and resilient at the same time. With the increase in high intensity rainfall events leading to urban flooding, dual purpose structures such as the Watersquare can really help. #watersensitivecities #watersquare #urbancities #watermanagement #urbanflooding #resilience #resilientcities #climatechange

This is especially hard, given the personal connection to Spain - and not an area I would have thought to be at significant risk. That's the crazy part - what is or is not at risk isn't as certain as it used to be.
