As #Florida recovers from two devastating hurricanes in quick succession, we consider the unique hydrologic footprint of each #stormsurge and the associated impacts/damages.? ? When we think of hurricanes, typically we envision the storm surge, or rising sea?levels that inundate the coastline because of the atmospheric pressure changes and wind associated with a storm.? ? But, because #tropicalstorm winds in the northern hemisphere spin counterclockwise around the eye of the storm, areas to the right of the eye will experience a drastic increase in #waterlevel, whereas areas to the left experience a drop, or #reversestormsurge.? ? #HurricaneMilton, which was originally projected to strike #Tampa (in Hillsborough County), actually made landfall to the south, in Siesta Key of #SarasotaCounty. The reverse storm surge effect is clearly evident from this timeseries for a water monitoring gauge in #HillsboroughCounty (top right), as compared to one in Sarasota County (bottom left).? ? These gauges are only ~65 miles apart, but exhibit vastly different coastal impacts from Hurricane Milton. Given that some stretches of Florida coastline have nearly 200 miles between public gauges, this example illustrates the very real need for increased data coverage. Where would you like to see more real-time water monitoring gauges? #FloridaRecovery #HurricanePreparedness #CoastalResilience #WaterMonitoring #ClimateAdaptation #DataDrivenInsights #Hydrology

The Colorado State University (CSU) Tropical Weather and Climate Research department has predicted 23 named tropical storms for the 2024 hurricane season. The number of named storms between 1991 and 2020 averaged 14.4 per year. Of the 23 storms predicted, CSU expects 11 to become hurricanes with 5 becoming major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5). Tropical Storm Alberto, which is currently moving inland over Mexico, represents the first of the 23 predicted named storms in 2024. #sustainability #sustainabilityreporting

The Insurance Information Institute, an affiliate with The Institutes, through its collaboration with Colorado State University's hurricane researchers, brings attention to the forecast for an "extremely active" Atlantic hurricane season in 2024. Led by Dr. Phil Klotzbach, the CSU Tropical Meteorology Project predicts heightened activity, with 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes expected due to record-warm sea surface temperatures. Triple-I, CEO Sean Kevelighan underscores, now is the time to ensure financial protection against potential losses. Review your policies, particularly focusing on flood coverage, often excluded from standard policies. Take proactive measures to safeguard your property and vehicles, including installing storm-resistant features. Prioritize preparedness for the challenges of the upcoming hurricane season.?? ? Colorado State University meteorologists just updated their 2024 forecast relative to named hurricanes and tropical storms, dropping the forecast from 25 to 23. Their forecast assumes about 12 hurricanes for this year. We still have over 3 1/2 months to go, but we have had 4 named storms, of which two have been hurricanes thus far. The likelihood of getting 10 hurricanes or 19 more named storms in 3 1/2 months is very low. This group's original forecast is consistent with particularly all the others out there, and it is the first that appears to have pulled back from the "Doomsday" forecast which dominated media coverage. The question this begs is whether multiple forecasters who have been telling insurers, the media, property managers like the woman we have in Naples, and politicians about this unprecedented hurricane season forecast will go back afterwards and figure out why they may have missed out. They still could be right, but it is increasingly unlikely that we will experience 10 more hurricanes or 19 more named storms the rest of this season. We use the term "accountability" in business and life not to blame people when things don't go according to plan, but to learn why and do better the next time. The question is whether anyone will hold weather forecasters and climate scientists to doing an after-action report in which they analyze why their forecasts were off base. We need to incorporate this kind of analysis into reviewing every important forecast that goes wrong. As the President of an association that is paying exceptionally high wind insurance premiums based on forecasts that assume unprecedented hurricanes and tropical storms, I believe we need a more rigorous analytic process, which holds forecasters more accountable to get things right.

An interesting Axios Newsletter read today.... ? Federal hurricane experts?unfortunately see no reason to soften their outlook for a highly active Atlantic hurricane season — one that has already featured multiple?damaging, fatal?storms. ? Why it matters:?Climate change can make tropical storms and hurricanes more dangerous, and hurricane season is nearing its traditional peak stretch. Systems draw strength from warmer oceans and air, producing more rainfall, and some hurricanes are also seeing rapid intensification. ? Driving the news:?The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration?issued a mid-season outlook?(see above) last week that largely hews to its?initial version in May. ? The big picture:?This season has already brought four named storms, most recently Debby, which made landfall last week in Florida as a Category 1 hurricane. ? The bottom line:?"The time to prepare is now," Matthew Rosencrans, lead hurricane season forecaster with NOAA's Climate Prediction Center, said in a statement. ?? Map Shows States Most Likely to Get Hit With Major Hurricane The Colorado State University (CSU) Tropical Weather and Climate Research Team reaffirmed their earlier predictions for an above-average 2024 hurricane season, forecasting 23 named storms, 11 hurricanes, and five major hurricanes. The report, based on data through June 11, highlights a significantly increased likelihood of major hurricanes making landfall in the U.S., with a 34% chance on the East Coast and 42% on the Gulf Coast, both well above historical averages. Florida, particularly Monroe County, is at high risk, with varied probabilities across different regions. The CSU emphasizes that these forecasts serve as informational tools rather than preparedness guides, urging thorough preparation regardless of predicted activity. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) also anticipates a busier season than usual, with 17 to 25 named storms, including four to seven major hurricanes. ??? ?????????????????? ???????????? ???????? ???????????? ??????! ?? On October 9, 2024, Category 3 Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, bringing 120 mph winds, heavy rains, and storm surges to southwest and central Florida. Sarasota was among the hardest-hit areas, but the storm quickly lost strength, sparing the region from catastrophic damage. Despite this, localized flooding and power outages required rescue operations, especially in Pasco County. Authorities issued evacuation orders and provided free fuel to assist residents. ?? Climate change is a serious issue fueling extreme weather events like Hurricane Milton. It's critical we make it a priority. Deep, abundant, bathtub-like waters in the Main Development Region, where the fiercest hurricanes roam, combined with lower wind shear thanks to a developing La Ni?a climate cycle, are acting in tandem to push the long-term forecast for the Atlantic hurricane season into uncharted territory

With several weather ???? impacting several states, #TeamIEM reminds communities to stay safe, stay prepared. For Day 6?? of National Hurricane Preparedness Week, we are proud to join the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration in promoting today’s theme: “Use Caution After Storms.” After a storm passes, it’s important to continue being cautious as you begin the clean-up and recovery processes. ???? Stay safe after a storm: ?? Avoid flooded areas – Don't drive, swim, or walk through floodwaters. ?? Turn around, don’t drown! ??♀? Listen to local officials – Stay away from areas that have not been marked safe by officials ?? Only return home when it’s safe to do so – Wait until directives to return home have been issued ?? Avoid electrical equipment – Don't attempt to use wet electrical equipment or appliances ??? Clean up cautiously – Be careful of hazards while cleaning up debris and flooded areas ??
