The way we work has fundamentally changed. After working from home for so long and absorbing all the benefits (and disadvantages) that come with working away from the office, we need to be aware that the office is, in many cases, in competition with home. That means we needed to find motivations to make it worthwhile to commute to the office several days a week. Thanks for the nudge Nic Winslade? A post & an article (I'll list in the comments) got me thinking... The Question: Where is work place flexibility going? My Answer: Fad Tides (and their inevitable turning) Do you remember when the open floor office space became a thing? When this fad tide came sweeping through it introduced a new environmental factor in that tired eco system and awoke something in some of us. The individuals & organisations that had unmet needs within the walled off wardens of old-school offices suddenly felt more connected, collaboration was more natural, and transparency created trust. Collectively this stimulated engagement, performance went up where it wasn't before, & the good news about the new fad tide spread. And then, because we like easy one-size- (or in this case one office floor layout) -fits-all answers to complex cultural dynamics, a lot of us said "YAY lets push all the walls down"; those with walls still up said "HEY unfair we should have our walls down too!"; & very little said "YO, I wonder whether we've got a diverse range of people that thrive when exposed to different environmental factors?”. When covid hit here in NZ & we all hid at home, we heard more bird life, our new way of life locked away at home meant another part of the eco system was fed & flourished. Had we taken the increase in the beautiful bird chirping as a sign to say we should all stay at home all the time, then we weren't listening beyond the birds. Next chapter in the open-floor-office-space-fad-tide-saga is we started to see companies realising the tide went too high, we presumed everyone would love it, but they didn't & now we've balanced that with a more hybrid office space, to better feed the diversity in the eco system. In the case of flexible work arrangements (such as work from home), we're seeing a similar fad tide playing out, we’ve experienced initial data to say there's something good here in this new environmental factor, a simple example being that certain people do better deeper work when uninterrupted. I'd call that feeding our Strengths (our naturally occurring patterns of behaviour) & given that Strength is no longer hangry that individual is far more engaged & productive. However, we're also now seeing new data that suggests higher levels of loneliness and disconnection for those working remotely, which is now turning the tide back towards more time together. The mistake we make is letting the chirping of one bird drown out the fact that an eco system is diverse in its needs, & therefore environmental factors should be diversified in the interest of ensuring all life gets fed. (shout out to Michelle Holliday who loves a eco system analogy). In short, if we consider the fad tide data in isolation and do not understand that people are unique in the way they respond to different environments, then we'll keep swinging. Identify someone's Strengths though, and you'll uncover the environment in which they thrive.
