In fostering an inclusive work environment, it's important to recognize the importance of accommodating employees of different physical and mental abilities. The architectural design of the workspace is important to inclusivity. Ensuring barrier-free access through adjustable workstations, wide doorways, and ramps can reduce physical obstacles. Ergonomic furniture that caters to a broad spectrum of needs, including height-adjustable desks and chairs with adjustable supports, is suggested. Also, the adoption of flexible work policies embodies the principle of inclusivity by accommodating and acknowledging the diverse needs of employees. Options such as part-time positions, flexible hours, and remote work can be beneficial for individuals who may require a tailored approach to their work environment or schedule. In addition, technology plays a role in creating an accessible workspace. Leveraging assistive technologies, such as customized input devices, screen readers, and voice recognition software can bridge the gap for employees with varying abilities, enabling them to perform their roles effectively. Furthermore, a culture of awareness and sensitivity helps support employees of different physical abilities. Regular training sessions that educate employees about accessibility, disability awareness, and the use of inclusive language can cultivate an environment of respect and understanding. Moreover, engaging employees in the decision-making process regarding accessibility and accommodations can provide valuable insights into the unique needs and preferences of individuals with different physical and mental abilities. This participatory approach ensures that the solutions implemented are genuinely effective and reflective of the diverse workforce they aim to support. By adopting these measures, organizations can ensure that their work environments are not only inclusive but also conducive to the well-being and productivity of all employees. This commitment to inclusivity upholds the values of diversity and equality and enhances the collective innovation and resilience of the workforce. #humanresources

I initially found working remotely incredibly challenging. I missed the routine, the community building, and yes even the commute - my opportunity to walk outside or read on transit, and more. Over time, and with my own conscious life changes, like everyone, I adapted to this new environment. And while some days are still harder than others, I have come to appreciate working remotely. The flexibility in time management including more sleep, the increased ability to provide care to family members, attend to medical appointments, and so forth, while increasing productivity due to the overall improvement in my mental wellbeing - has been a win to say the least. I had not thought about this from the perspective of those with disabilities and/or BIPOC people. Thank you Lindsay Bissett and Leda HR. If this change can increase the safety and overall well being of equity seeking groups, this is something we should always support and only seek to improve. Another insightful blog from Lindsay Bissett for Leda HR reminding us we can only move forward, not back. "I challenge leaders to fight the status quo, expect of yourselves what you expect of your teams- flexibility, innovation, evolution, personal development and ultimately productivity. Adam Grant says pushing the status quo is necessary for organizations to make “painful but necessary” changes." This applies to many aspects of the workplace and innovative leaders know change is upon us. CHALLENGE THE STATUS QUO.
#RemoteWork Series?? A Win for People With Disabilities and Many More Friend of #LedaHR Lindsay Bissett digs into the vast benefits of remote work in our most recent blog. Particularly good timing as we see more leaders and employers mandating a return to office. We must fight against returning to status-quo, especially when we would lose ground on such an inclusive, beneficial workplace evolution. "Carbon emissions, travel time and costs, all saved. Women and people of color also report being happier working from home. Working from home can offer a stronger work life balance, reduce anxiety, fatigue, and the potential for workplace prejudice. People with disabilities report being more included in the workforce as a result of working from home, with decreased need for workplace accommodations and increased flexibility in general. #Flexibility remains a top priority for those in and entering the workforce. All of this makes working from home a huge #InclusiveDesign win. This is why we cannot stop talking about the benefits and advocating for inclusive design." #HR #Leadership #DEI #EDI #PeopleWithDisabilities #PWD #Virtual #Inclusion #Diversity #Equity #FutureOfWork Kristin Bower Annika Lofstrand Rianna Ganief William Azaroff Aran Oster Clarke Shona McGlashan FCG GPC.D Ilene Toth Robin Matthews-Kanhai Agnes Garaba Saffina Jinnah Jenette Barry Jennifer DesLauriers Lisa Laderoute Lisa Martin https://lnkd.in/guKVdpPs

Is the remote vs in-office debate still the only flex topic in town? And if that’s all anyone is focusing on, what are we missing? We’d argue that the blanket coverage of this particular issue is sidelining some of the other aspects of flexible working that can be hugely powerful – like its role in boosting diversity and inclusion. Flexible working has been shown to help attract and retain people from key groups, including parents, carers, women, underrepresented minorities, older people, and those with physical and mental health issues. And it’s not just about ticking a D & I box – both the companies involved and wider society benefit when workplaces are more diverse. Such an important read for HR leaders. While this isn't a management/HR problem per se, there are ways HR can help women who are struggling to balance work and family responsibilities. For example, creating a ‘right to disconnect policy’, or at the very least, organizing a safe space for remote women and caregivers to share work-life balance strategies and advice. #HR #RemoteWork #WorkLifeBalance
