While I completely disagree with EPRI (in this Utility Dive piece linked below) that what our industry really needs is interoperability standards (hot tip - #VPPs are already at scale), I love the way this article amplifies the fact that VPPs will meet grid needs coming from electrification and other load growth. Clarification for readers: VPP integration does not require costly “custom software” and “months or years" to complete and implement. We launch VPPs in 90-120 days. The easy way to do this is with a grid-edge DERMS. A grid-edge DERMS is the middle layer between customer-owned devices and the dispatch of devices in response to utility signals, said Erika Diamond, senior vice president and head of customer solutions for DER aggregator EnergyHub. An aggregator’s software can make a VPP operational and cost-effective within months and relieves the utility of grid-edge complexities, she added. “A solar and storage VPP may run without a DERMS, but a grid-edge DERMS could enable any DER device to be a grid asset,” Diamond said. “Utilities are adopting individual DER programs but don’t know how to value a program that can dispatch the many different customer-owned DER across the distribution system 24/7 to meet system needs,” she added. “Utility program administrators do, however, need to standardize software for automated notifications of the need for peak load reductions to aggregators and customers,” said Sunrun’s Rauscher. “The power system is likely to need a lot of flexible resources in the coming decade,” EnergyHub’s Diamond said. “It will take all the flexible resources that are available,”?and the?projected value of that flexibility?is likely to make VPPs “totally scalable and affordable,” she added.

Can data centers support the local grid? ?? A new initiative in the US called DCFlex - Optimize Data Center Operational Flexibility to Help Strengthen the Grid - will explore how data centers can enhance grid flexibility, support clean energy goals, and increase operational efficiency. Through real-world demonstrations, the aim is to establish “flexibility hubs” where data centers and power suppliers would be able to trial new strategies, streamline grid integration, and repurpose backup power solutions as grid assets. In the context of ESG and a surge in demand for electricity by data centers worldwide, what they are trying to do is find out whether data centers can transition from passive loads to active grid players, contributing to both reliability and affordability for all energy users.
