???? Tariffs Hit Hard: America’s South Breaks Canada’s Grip on Timber ?? In a significant shift, the American South is set to overtake Canada as the dominant producer of North American lumber for the first time since 1970, driven by a combination of tariffs, environmental challenges, and changing market dynamics. ?? Key Highlights: 1?? Changing Landscape: The ongoing softwood lumber dispute has escalated, with the U.S. imposing steep tariffs on Canadian lumber. British Columbia's lumber industry faces substantial challenges from wildfires, insect infestations, and regulatory pressures, and Canadian producers are struggling to maintain their market share. 2?? Economic Impact: The U.S. lumber coalition credits these tariffs with boosting domestic investment and capacity. As Canadian sawmills close due to high costs and reduced revenue, the South capitalises on its faster-growing private forests, positioning itself as the "largest wood basket on the continent." 3?? Future Considerations: While the U.S. is gaining ground, experts warn that it still relies on Canadian imports to meet demand. The ongoing dispute raises questions about long-term pricing and supply, as U.S. production may not suffice to fill the gap left by a diminished Canadian sector. ??? #questionsforgroup: How can the timber industry adapt to these changes in market dynamics? What strategies should be employed to ensure sustainable growth while navigating the complexities of trade disputes? ?? ?? Why Slow Timber Demand Threatens NZ’s $4B Log Exports! ?? New Zealand’s timber industry faces significant challenges as local and Australian demand for timber remains low, threatening the viability of the $4 billion export industry. ?? Key Insights: 1??Low Demand: While there's an uptick in timber purchases in Asia, notably in China and India, it's not enough to offset the slump in local and Australian markets. 2??Market Pressures: The PF Olsen Log Price Index indicates a notable drop in prices, with the April index falling to $113, underscoring a volatile market scenario. 3??Exports Decline: Log exports to China have decreased by 25% this April, with further reductions expected. This decline is attributed to various factors, including weather conditions, price levels, and diversification of markets such as India. ?? From the Source: Scott Downs of PF Olsen highlights the precarious situation, noting that despite increased log buying in China, the market sentiment remains weak, with many struggling to turn a profit. ?? Global Shifts: Exports are diversifying, with India emerging as a growing market due to geopolitical shifts and logistical challenges affecting other timber exporting nations. ?? What This Means: The timber industry in New Zealand is at a crossroads. With local demand failing to pick up, the focus might need to shift more towards enhancing export capabilities and exploring new markets to sustain the industry. ?? ?? China’s Ports Packed with NZ Timber! ??A new report produced by PF Olsen calculates that more than 3.4 cubic metres of New Zealand radiata pine are currently at the port in China - representing more than 85% of timber, causing a bottleneck at Chinese ports. ?? What the report said: 1?? In 2023, 89% of New Zealand's log exports were destined for China, highlighting the significant reliance on this market for New Zealand's timber industry. 2?? This situation is further complicated by the PF Olsen Log Price Index's drop and a misalignment between supply and demand dynamics, prompting a call for a reduction in log supply to correct the market imbalance. 3?? The dominance of China as New Zealand's primary market for raw log imports is undeniable, yet efforts to diversify exports to countries like India and South Korea are underway. ????Despite these efforts, China's demand for New Zealand timber remains a critical factor for the industry, influenced by global challenges, including trade restrictions and environmental issues. ??? #questionforgroup: With the current challenges facing New Zealand's timber export sector, how can exporters and forest owners adapt to ensure sustainability and resilience in their operations? Are there lessons to be learned from this situation that could apply to other export-reliant industries? ?? Let's explore the implications of this export bottleneck and discuss strategies for navigating the complexities of global trade, particularly in sectors heavily reliant on a single export market. ?? Finnish sawmill industry in crisis after halted Russian timber imports — newspaper Several drivers are in place for the price hike, including the contracting demand for timber in construction and termination of imports from Russia, the newspaper said HELSINKI, August 6/ Termination of timber imports from Russia seriously affected the sawmill industry of Finland, the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper said. "The timber price increased much more than the finished product price, i.e. lumber. The ratio between logs and lumber prices surged to the highest level over the last 15 years, making the economic situation very challenging," CEO of the Finnish Sawmills Tino Aalto told the news outlet. Several drivers are in place for the price hike, including the contracting demand for timber in construction and termination of imports from Russia, the newspaper said. In 2023, Finland imported record-high garbage quantity after termination of timber and wood waste from Russia, with the highest growth observed in imports of waste suitable for the use as a fuel, Yle public broadcaster said in February. #business #finance #financialservices
