A thought-provoking article about how middle class liberals frame children. Children are investments to be optimised on the one hand; on the other hand, they are obstacles to your own career. This is very much the economic or "neoliberal" philosophy. But what is missing is love, or the qualitative dimensions of child-rearing that can't be reduced to the logic of the market. In short, we need a new language for understanding child-rearing. #semiotics #children https://lnkd.in/eqbnEkXj

Been reading a lot about language and definitions for my PhD and whilst lots of things annoy me (what’s new ??), I’m finding it increasingly troubling that organisations that were founded as grassroots, feminist organisations, and who still describe themselves as grounded in feminist principles are using the language of other sectors. Domestic violence is now being called domestic abuse, sexual violence is now being called sexual harm, sexual abuse by minors is being called harmful sexual behaviour… If we sanitise our language and stop naming things accurately, we lose the activism, we lose the power, and we risk minimising experiences which is exactly what the patriarchy wants us to do. We called it violence for a reason, we called it abuse for a reason. It remind me of a quote I opened my MA dissertation with: “But sometimes what we want is one thing, what we get is another. Since movements, no matter how noble and highly motivated, do not continue of their momentum, we have a duty to assess, evaluate, analyze, take stock. We must try to measure the health of our movement and figure its chances for growth and, indded (sic), for survival. And if we see that our movement is in ill health, we must name what we see, and try to cure it. (Weisstein and Booth, 1978: 18)” So here’s a note to anyone working in a SV/DV org, think carefully about the language you use and spend more time analysing your decisions. They matter more than you think.

This was a challenging article to write! I’m excited to share our new paper with Teresa Cremin on reading for pleasure (RfP), now published OA in Cambridge Journal of Education ?? We argue that our common humanity implies a right to equality, yet we live in a society marked by many forms of injustice. To influence systemic decisions with rigorous scientific #evidence, teachers and researchers need a shift in #dispositions. The potential for transformative change lies in individual dispositions, which can be profoundly humanizing if rooted in what we call "Funds of Courage" ?? Inspired by Frances Kissling's definition of the most noble kind of courage—"the #courage to be vulnerable in front of those we passionately disagree with"—we assert that combining *vulnerability* and *resilience* fosters a contextually nuanced discourse around courage and shifts in RfP. ?? Our focus is on social justice (rather than individual right for justice) and on literacies (contextually dependent reading and writing in both digital and analogue formats).? ?? We synthesize findings from RfP #research-#practice #partnerships, including volunteers building #digital #libraries for Ukrainian refugees, and over 100 UK teacher groups led by The Open University -trained volunteers supporting #reading enjoyment for both #teachers and #children https://lnkd.in/dum4kNx6

An important read. "Internationally, there is growing recognition of the significance and value of reading for pleasure, or choice-led recreational reading, for young children. Reading for Pleasure (RfP hereafter) is positively associated with cognitive development, specific learning outcomes such as vocabulary and mathematics (Sullivan & Brown, 2015), academic achievement more broadly (Smith et al., 2012) and psychological wellbeing (Sun et al., 2023).? Hey Columbia University , quick question: How many Jewish babies need to be murdered before justifying their deaths disqualifies someone from teaching their history? Joseph Massad , your newest professor of Jewish Enlightenment thinks October 7th was just 'resistance.' Brilliant move. Nothing says 'academic excellence' like having Jewish liberation taught by someone who celebrates Jewish persecution. Your 'diversity of thought' is just antisemitism with a PhD. Wondering why Jewish students feel unsafe? Here's your Prof. Massad, reframing their family's murder as political discourse. This isn't education—it's erasure with extra credits. While lecturing about Jewish emancipation, Columbia chains Jewish narratives to their oppressors.

From the archives... I concur with the points provided in this article from John Stuart Mill, but as I approach these from a Christian worldview, I would summarize three of them as follows: 1) Parents have a God-given responsibility to educate their children, 2) Children should be taught with an eye towards Christian discipleship, and 4) Whomever God calls, He qualifies. I skipped #3 as I approach this from a conservative political viewpoint. 3) The free market tends to produce a higher quality output for a lower cost, while monopolies (especially government-controlled ones) tend to do the opposite. #HomeEducation #homeschool #homeschooling #education #GetOutNow #PublicSchoolExit #ChristianEducation #EdcuationIsDiscipleship #ChristianHomeschoolRevolution Annie Holmquist https://lnkd.in/g7Ef8if5
