These are the moments that keep us going, fueling the forward momentum of our missions and visions. If you know me, you know I have a soft spot for fur babies. Now with four cats, I can say with certainty: the cat distribution system knows what it does because they fill my home (and heart) with so much joy. ???????? ???????????????? ?????? ?????? ??????????????????, ???? ?????????? ???? ?????? ???????? ???? ???????? ???????? ?????? ???????????? ??????????. ?There are so many shelters and rescues filled with animals waiting for love. #ChannelOneMN is the recipient of a UCare Foundation grant, which will help us increase the number of people reached and helping eliminate barriers to access through prepared meals in local communities through our Kitchen Coalition program! Not everyone facing hunger has the home, health, or ability to use groceries a food bank offers, including students, seniors, and people experiencing homelessness. ? Kitchen Coalition addresses these barriers by partnering with other organizations to serve up culturally connected, freshly prepared meals. With grants like UCare, Channel One can help provide 979 meals weekly to those who have the need for prepared meals, like the residents at the emergency Women's Shelter in Rochester. The promise of a meal is not only beneficial nutritionally, but helps these residents find community and peace of mind in the face of so much adversity. "Having meals readily available truly helps to foster a warm, homelike environment where everyone feels safe and welcome. Meals can be shared together at our large dining room table or in resident’s room, where they have their own microwaves."

Something I feel very strongly about is volunteering in hospice. The patients in this area of healthcare are majorly neglected when it comes to volunteer services. However, there are a lot of benefits to partaking in this. For one, your experience volunteering will expose you to the hardships of healthcare, but also give you a different perspective of life. For me, when I visit and am talking with patients, it makes me feel a different type of gratefulness for life. I look at it as my privilege to be there. As well, it gives happiness to the families who are experiencing hardships. Making even this little of a difference can be a big deal. Additionally, although some hospice patients are unaware of where they are, there are actually many that are aware. With these patients, giving them happiness and showing them that you enjoy their company will bring their spirits up, and aid in potentially improving the psychological impact they experience being in a hospice environment. As someone entering the healthcare field, I will continue to advocate for hospice patients to be thought of more. For me, volunteering for Alzheimer’s advocacy and fundraising is deeply personal. Having lost my mother, grandmothers, and my godmother to the disease, I’ve witnessed firsthand the devastating impact it has on families. The journey of caregiving was challenging, filled with moments of sadness, frustration, and love. It was during this time that I realized the urgent need for support and research to combat this debilitating disease. On Thursday, April 25 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, I will join the Alzheimer's Association Louisiana Chapter, the Alzheimer's Impact Movement (AIM) and fellow advocates from across the state to meet with policymakers to share their stories and advance policies to improve the lives of Louisianans impacted by Alzheimer’s and other dementia. Alzheimer’s and other dementia have a growing impact on state health systems, budgets, and workforces. By 2025, the number of Louisiana adults age 65 and older with Alzheimer’s is projected to increase by 110,000. In 2023, Alzheimer’s and other dementias cost American taxpayers an estimated $345 billion, and the cost is projected to rise to nearly $1 trillion by 2050. Louisiana also has 200,000 caregivers that provide over 363 million hours of unpaid care. The CMS Companies are excited to share the launch of our new Volunteer Time Off (VTO) program, which allows employees to take paid time off to support a local organization of their choice. We believe that community involvement not only strengthens individuals but also the systems that uplift us all. Recently, Louise from our accounting department volunteered with Mama’s Kitchen in San Diego, CA. This remarkable organization provides nutritional support to San Diego residents at risk of malnutrition due to critical illnesses. Through the efforts of dedicated volunteers, businesses, and community supporters, Mama’s Kitchen delivers medically tailored meals and nutrition education to help clients stay healthy, maintain dignity, and support their families—all at no cost. Here’s what Louise had to say about her experience: “This was a great experience and something I have wanted to participate in for a long time. This is so true! It’s imperative that organizations approach diversifying their fundraising revenue through a thoughtful/strategic planned giving program, not a reactive program. Too many times fundraisers jump directly into tactics without creating a strategic plan, setting appropriate expectations with leadership and getting buy-in. This is exactly why we created the National Standards for Gift Planning Success at the National Association of Charitable Gift Planners. DoubleDown Engage For the months of October and November, we partnered with Hunger Intervention Program. ?? HIP’s mission is to increase food security for underserved populations in North King County through notorious meals, educational programs, and advocacy. They started with a couple of volunteers in 1998, serving lunches in downtown Seattle. By 2008, HIP officially became a nonprofit. Since then, they have developed programs such as Senior Community Meal, Shelter Meal Program, Healthy HIP Packs, Summer Meals, After School Meal and Cooking / Nutrition Education Classes. They now serve 10,000 meals a month to children, families, seniors and unhoused individuals! ?? In October, we held a Snack & Learn Session where they showed us how they bring hope to those in need. We learned that hunger remains a critical issue, according to the 2023 WAFOOD survey where 21% of households said they experienced low food security and 25% of households said they experienced very low food security.? ?? In November, a group of DDI employees helped HIP assemble over 360 healthy after school snack packs! These packs were then distributed to 13 local schools to ensure kids would have food over the weekend. Together we have donated $900 to help support HIP's mission! Thank you again HIP for this opportunity to collaborate and support such a meaningful cause. We are grateful for the chance to work together and create positive change within the community.
