Academic Authors-- May is for myth busting! In May, I will open my editing calendar for September 2024 through June 2025. To celebrate, my May posts will focus on explaining the most common fears I hear about developmental editing, such as "a developmental editor will obscure my voice and change my argument (in ways I don't want)." Most of the fears I hear are unfounded if you are working with a professional developmental editor, and I am excited to walk you through what you can actually expect when you hire a developmental editor. What concern do you have (or have you heard) about hiring a developmental editor? #amediting #academia #academicwriting

A news story is much more than just plain facts. Yes, the facts are critical, but few people enjoy reading prose that’s just this side of a bullet-pointed list. This was a lesson Fitch Ink editor Christine Gibson learned years ago after she had been promoted from editorial assistant to assistant editor at the history magazine where she first started out. The new position brought on fresh responsibilities, such as helping to write and edit a front-of-the-book section, which is where she got great advice from a senior editor: “Put in some extra work to flesh out your stories.” Christine had been writing a short article for the front-of-book, primarily by condensing a press release. But her editor dug a little deeper in the library, found a new nugget of information and wove it into the story to make it just a touch stronger and more unique to their company. Going this extra mile can be what puts your stories over the top. And Christine has certainly learned how to wield that superpower. Here at Fitch Ink, part of Christine’s beat is making complex technical concepts from GE Aerospace and Mastercard understandable for the average reader. The experts she interviews certainly help, but often she needs to supplement their explanations with a day or two of extra research. It adds depth to her stories, and the extra knowledge makes it easier for her to explain high-level info in layman’s terms. “That’s how I figured out how jet engines and quantum computers work,” said Christine. And her story is how we figured out how those computers work, too! Research does more than just make the content palatable. It can also bring it to life. A footnote from an old manuscript can become a humorous aside, or patching clues together from several sources can clarify a timeline or imbue some color. So when you’re writing your next story, make sure you take at least one extra step. You could find a juicy tidbit that really sets your story apart. . Someone asked me what a good journal editor should look like. This graphic about sums it up. A good editor is a servant for the community. Not a servant for their career. A good editor commits to the growth of of everyone. Not to the growth of their CV and citations. A good editor listens and responds to feedback from their community. Not just demands and directs based on their personal opinions. A good editor makes hard decisions. Not just placates the loudest voices. A good editor remains humble throughout their term. Not using their journal as a platform for self-promotion. There are no perfect editors. There are some very good editors who embody these attributes. When you select where to submit your work, send your papers to good editors. Why? Bc they are more likely to give your paper a fair shake. And. They deserve our support. #academiclife

Connecting with Editors and Agents When our second child was born in 1972, I left a job I absolutely loved in the editorial offices of my denomination. Debbie didn't sleep through the night for TWO YEARS so I couldn’t go back to work. But I missed the challenge of working with words & meeting deadlines. So I began writing for publication. I longed to get my work in print, but I also struggled with self-doubts. Was my writing good enough? And was I smart enough? I was only a high school graduate. I started with devotional magazines & church school take home papers. God was, and is, good. He knew with my fragile self-esteem I would have given up if all I received was rejection slips, so most of my 300 submissions were accepted or returned with an encouraging note. Today, it is rare for writers to even get a rejection slip, much less a written note. Instead, we wait and wonder and conclude after several months of silence that the editor is not interested. This is not a criticism of editors. I know they face overwhelming workloads & constant deadlines. The days of directly submitting our work are past. Most editors accept submissions only from agents. And, sadly, finding an agent isn't any easier than finding a publisher. So, what's a writer to do? This is where Christian writers’ conferences make it possible to connect with editors and agents. Remembering when I tried pitching my first book at conferences, the August 7-10 VIRTUAL Write His Answer Conference I direct provides lots of pre-conference FREE events to help, including a nonfiction pitch session with Karen Whiting and fiction session with DiAnn Mills. AND THAT's NOT ALL. While the pitch sessions are only open to registered conferees, the following webinars are FREE and open to everyone: Nonfiction One Sheet Fiction One Sheet The Weight of the First Page Pitching to Industry Professionals Last year, conferee Charlene Giles took advantage of these opportunities. She says: "One year ago I felt like an imposter. Who was I to claim to be a writer? I had never attended a large writers conference and the jargon was foreign to me. One sheet. Which one sheet? Editors? More than one kind? Indie? From India? Thanks to Marlene’s guidance and pre-conference prep, I successfully shared my one sheet with several editors and publishers. The encouragement I received was invigorating! Don’t be scared to jump into the deep end! The water is fine." https://charlenegiles.com/ This year's August 7-10 VIRTUAL Write His Answer Conference features a faculty of 70 including 10 agents, 22 book editors, and 14 periodical editors. Three FREE appointments with editors and agents are still available, but you must register by August 1. For more info go to?https://lnkd.in/eq_BqzpT. Scholarship help and time payments are available.

I save these little raves/comments of praise that come back after I've edited (which often involves a lot of re-writing) a scientific manuscript or federal grant proposal. What can you celebrate as 2024 draws to a close? "I really like the way you improve the communication of the main points while reducing the unnecessary fluff. Amazing..." A lot of people don't understand what #Editors do (did you know there are editors who specialize in #AcademicEditing and #ScientificEditing?)—but once a client sees good editing, they realize its value. A good editor can tighten your sentences, spot gaps in logic, catch assumptions you've made about the reader's knowledge level, get rid of redundancies, make suggestions for more inclusive language, replace jargon with more understandable terms. I'm so grateful to the clients I've been able to work with this year—and for their appreciation of my editing and writing skills. Being a freelancer is difficult for many reasons, but it's truly an honor to work with a client. I've been fortunate that my client's values and goals align with mine: helping others, sharing research results, advancing science and medicine, caring for our environment, working toward equity in all facets. I've never worked harder or more hours than I did this year. Here's to 2025. #HappyHolidays #Gratitude
