Russia tears up deals that allowed Japan to set up centers for assisting Russian reforms Mishustin, in his decree, directed the Russian Foreign Ministry to notify Japan about the measure MOSCOW, January 18/ Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin ordered the termination of the memorandums between the Russian and Japanese governments that enabled the work of Japanese centers for technical assistance to Russian reforms. The memorandums were signed in Tokyo in September 2000 and in Vladivostok in June 2003 to regulate the establishment and operation of Japan Centers in Russia. Mishustin, in his decree, directed the Russian Foreign Ministry to notify Japan about the measure. Japan Centers were non-profit organizations engaged in training Russian company managers and businessmen. They conducted lectures and workshops, providing internship opportunities in Japan to the most capable students. The centers were financed by the Japanese government through the Japanese Embassy in Russia. The five centers in Russia were based in St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Khabarovsk, Vladivostok and Sakhalin, and there was a head office in Moscow. #business #finance #financialservices

The Value of Short Courses and Specialisation in Career Growth Today, I had an interesting conversation about a common assumption: that universities are the only way to get ahead in your career. While degrees are undoubtedly valuable, this isn't always true—especially in fields like engineering. Often, those who attend colleges for practical, specialised training are preferred over candidates with purely theoretical knowledge. In South Africa, many universities are integrating both theoretical and practical learning, which is commendable. But even with this integration, the reality is that university degrees often provide a broad foundation, leaving room for further specialisation. I can relate to this as an agricultural economist. While my degree gave me a strong grounding in economics, the field itself is vast, with areas like trade, development, or climate policy requiring deeper expertise. This is where short courses or specialised training come in—they offer the opportunity to hone your skills in specific areas, making you a valuable asset in the workplace. However, choosing a path can be challenging, especially when career guidance is limited. This lack of information is one of the factors contributing to youth unemployment in South Africa. The bottom line? Lifelong learning matters. Whether through short courses, training programs, or further studies, the decision to specialise or expand your knowledge is a personal choice that could shape your future. Meaningful and interesting stats in my opinion.

South Africa and the Netherlands look great together! The Dutch Ministerie van Infrastructuur en Waterstaat (infrastructure & Watermanagement) is exploring learning possibilities in South Africa! Offcourse education and science are part of the exploration, since innovation comes from investment, trial and error and young and bright minds! The new Dutch government is heavily depending on innovation in their new plans, so a good moment to learn from good examples overseas. I learned a new diplomatic approach today: #economic_science_diplomacy R&D budgets and efforts that are needed from the private sector to reach the common goals we have in both countries. The South African Department of Science and Innovation is a truly inspiring partner due to their wide perspective on scientific research and innovation, often in strong connection with local communities where “normal people” often find the smartest and most innovative solutions for daily life problems. Great to learn that part of the approach is to also innovate the government policies to keep being aligned with the found innovations and to be able to implement and use them. Potential areas to explore more collaboration: 1. The built environment - building green innovations. 2. Smart cities. As a result of a partnership between academics from six universities of the FORTHEM alliance and practitioners from?SIETAR Europa,?SIETAR Switzerland,?SIETAR UK,?the SIETAR SIG Migration?and?diversophy?, it focuses on?the analysis of mismatched expectations and misunderstandings during the migrants’ transitional phase and the ways to overcome these issues.
