How Do Startup Founders Make Money? Whether you're in college or contemplating a career change, launching a startup can be enticing. But how do startup founders actually make money? ??Product sales- Generating revenue through the sale of services or products is a primary method. This can include subscription models, free trials, or pay-per-use options. ??Trade sale exit- Most startups are acquired rather than going public. This can involve selling shares or assets to a strategic acquirer or competitor. ??IPO exit route An Initial Public Offering (IPO) allows founders and private investors to sell shares for a profit, accessing public market funding while retaining some control. ?? Accepting investments for equity Startups can accept investments from venture capitalists or private equity firms in exchange for equity. Once profitable, the startup can repay these investors. ??Generating advertising revenue- Selling advertising space on websites or apps is another revenue stream, leveraging the innovative and cutting-edge nature of startups to attract advertisers. ???Monetizing through partnerships- Partnerships such as joint ventures, licensing agreements, or strategic alliances can help startups leverage resources, access new markets, and increase credibility. What was the most significant turning point in your career so far? Moving to Singapore in 2018 to pursue my MBA at Singapore Management University has been the biggest turning point as it allowed me to pursue a professional and entrepreneurial life in Singapore. This has led me to meet my co-founders and embark on our journey at Auptimate to solve problems in the Venture Ecosystem. ?? How do you envision your career trajectory over the next five years? I am very excited by the problem we’re solving at Auptimate to help Fund Managers, Angel Syndicates, and Startup Founders be more efficient with their capital raising and deployment by helping them set up and operate SPVs, Syndicates and Funds. With my co-founders and our amazing team, we’re on the path to making this a very large business, and I see that, for the next 5-7 years, we will be solving more such problems in the Venture Ecosystem with Auptimate. ?? What emerging startup trend or niche are you keeping a close eye on? The hottest trend in the startup ecosystem these days is AI, and businesses are now evaluating how they can drive efficiency, improve customer experience and be innovative with the use of AI. Another niche I'm excited about is D2C brands catering to the growing demands of the SEA market. ?What are some of the essential tools you rely on for different tasks within your role? In my role, I primarily focus on Marketing and one great tool we use is LinkedIn Sales Navigator. In fact, about 60% of our early business came through cold outreach on Sales Navigator. Boardio enters North America! When it comes to growth companies, North America is by far the most important region in many ways. The market size is huge, with top universities the amount of innovation clearly exceeds that of any other region, and the startup ecosystem, with leading VCs and accelerators, has long been number one in the world. This is a market into which you do not enter with a half-ready product to test the waters. We at Boardio have felt that even though we have a network of over 7,000 advisors (out of which 700 are from the US) and have assisted nearly 700 companies in finding advisors, we haven't been ready to enter NA, mainly due to the lack of suitable Country Managers. Now things have changed. We have been fortunate to find Yuri Kruman (US) and Gaurav Bansal (Canada) to run the Boardio business in their regions. Yuri (below left) has had a long career in HR and currently runs an HR consultancy firm, which provides great synergies to Boardio. Yuri's work as a contributor to several business magazines and as a consultant to many Inc. 5000 companies and VC-backed startups has provided him with a large network that will be of great benefit when starting the Boardio business in the US. Gaurav (below right) is a true global citizen with a vast network and experience across countries in the global tech ecosystem. He is a Tech Investor & Advisor (with over 100 startup investments globally) with experience in venture capital and global growth accelerator programs (with over 35 investments in 10 countries) and investment banking. Although based in Canada, Gaurav will serve Boardio clients also from other regions. We are convinced that with Yuri and Gaurav, Boardio will successfully enter the North American market, making Boardio the leading service in its field both in Europe and now also in NA. We are thrilled to start this new chapter with Yuri and Gaurav.

We Are Not “Local Players” Anymore — We’re Global Players Who Happen To Call MENA Home In the post-COVID world, geography is no longer the barrier it used to be. The world is more connected than ever, and both startups and venture capitalists are playing on a global stage. As founders and VCs in the MENA region, it’s crucial to acknowledge this reality. We are not “local” players anymore — we’re global players who happen to call MENA home. For startups, the landscape has changed dramatically. Every startup today is competing not just with local companies but with global ones, regardless of their physical location. Consider the likes of Revolut, Airbnb, Stripe, Zoom, and TikTok — all of these companies have expanded into regions far beyond their origins, and redefined market entry, making global expansion the norm, not the exception. The reality is, there are no “local companies” anymore. If you think of yourself as just a local startup, you’ve lost already. You’re competing not just with the shop next door but with a well-funded, ambitious company halfway across the globe that has already set its sights on your market. But here’s the nuance: there’s a difference between a local company and a company solving a local problem. A local company confines itself to a specific geography, limiting its ambition and its market reach. On the other hand, a company solving a local problem is just getting started — it’s solving a challenge that might exist in many regions, with the potential to expand and scale. When you solve a local problem, you’re laying the foundation to solve that problem elsewhere too. You’re building expertise, product-market fit, and a brand that can be expanded globally. You’re not just “local”; you’re solving something with global relevance, just beginning with the local context you know best. For VCs, the mandate is clear: we look for ethical, responsible financial returns — wherever they might be. We’re not developmental funds; we’re here to build value and generate returns. Whether that value emerges in Riyadh, Dubai, San Francisco, London, or Singapore, we’re ready to support it. Investment today is borderless. As founders and VCs in MENA, we need to embrace this mindset. The boundaries that once defined our market are fading, and the opportunity to build globally relevant, impactful companies is at our doorstep. As a tech person closely monitoring global trends, it's increasingly evident that while traditional startup cities like San Francisco, New York, and London continue to dominate the global VC ecosystem rankings, there's a significant gap that emerging regions, particularly in Southern Europe and other parts of the world, need to bridge. Recent reports, such as the one below, underscore that top cities are not only maintaining but strengthening their positions as epicenters of innovation and investment. This dominance is underpinned by robust investment flows, a "sometimes" conducive regulatory environment, and an entrenched culture of innovation that continues to attract top talent and groundbreaking startups. However, this spotlight on traditional hubs brings into sharp relief the challenges faced by cities outside these core regions. Many cities in Southern Europe, for example, though rich in talent and innovative ideas, are still playing catch-up. The critical element missing is not just funding but a comprehensive ecosystem approach that includes government support, investor readiness to bet on local startups, and infrastructure that fosters innovation. This disparity raises important questions about the uneven development of global startup ecosystems. Why are investors and governments in some regions hesitant to invest heavily in their local startup ecosystems? The need for a strategic push to cultivate these ecosystems is clear if they are to compete on the global stage. As we look forward, the call to action is for leaders, policymakers, and investors in these emerging regions to take a proactive stance.
