Last week, I participated in a high-level seminar on resilient drylands: Innovation for sustainable agricultural landscapes and livelihoods. This webinar, organized by the FAO Plant Production and Protection Division (NSP), explored innovative approaches to addressing the complexity and harnessing the potential of dryland agriculture to build local resilience and adaptive capacity. It aligns with the FAO Strategic Framework 2022–2031, which emphasizes the transformation towards more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable agrifood systems. Specifically, I shared some insights on how our work at Sahel Consulting and African Food Changemakers is promoting entrepreneurship and agrifood innovations in the drylands across Africa and highlighted the need to: ? Support agri-food entrepreneurs to scale successful private sector-led initiatives, e.g., backward integration models and service provision models for farmers. ? Empower agrifood entrepreneurs to build resilience against climate shocks. ? Leverage infrastructure development to harness dryland resources such as solar energy to power agriculture and other industries. ? Create knowledge hubs for data and information exchange for informed business decisions and evidence-based program design and implementation in drylands e.g. scaling ongoing initiatives like the African Food Changemakers’ Hub.? ? Support the creation of a policy platform for a coordinated voice on the development of drylands in Africa. The African Development Bank Group has called for increased funding for sustainable agriculture policies, practices, and innovation. The Bank made the call during side events it organised at the Africa Food Systems Summit 2024 in Kigali, #Rwanda. The summit, under the theme, "Innovate, Accelerate and Scale: Delivering food systems transformation in a digital and climate era," set the stage for discussions on the future of #agriculture in Africa. ?
