?? NEGLA Masterclass: Mining, extractivism, and land rights in Africa ?? 5 December, 10:00 - 13:00 SAST ?? Register (MS Teams): https://lnkd.in/eVrrkwah Since colonial times, extractions and exports of natural resources have defined Africa’s insertion and subordinate status in the global capitalist economy. After a period of relative stagnation, Africa’s mineral economy was revitalised by the Asian (especially Chinese) driven commodity boom of the 2000s. Over the past decade or so, the concept of “extractivism”, which originated in Latin America, has been increasingly used as “an organising concept” to understand the multiplicity of social and power relations, as well as ecological effects of contemporary export-driven natural resource exploitation. But how do we understand it today in the African context? What are citizens and their movements' resistances to extractivism, and what transformation initiatives should African governments undertake? Our next NELGA Masterclass happens this week! Explore mining and extractivism's impact on land rights in Africa with Dr Yao Graham. Network of Excellence on Land Governance in Africa -NELGA

???? New #mycoremediation breakthrough discovery in Indonesia! Researchers have uncovered the potential of #indigenous #fungi to combat #mercury #pollution from illegal gold mining activities. This discovery could revolutionise how we approach environmental clean-up in mining-affected areas. ?? The study identified fungi belonging to the genera #Aspergillus and #Penicillium, as well as a member of the Basidiomycota phylum. Quantitative results showed that?Penicillium sp.?reduced mercury levels by 48% and the Basidiomycota by 46%. ?? Dr. Ratna Dewi, the study's lead author, commented: "These indigenous fungi have evolved in mercury-rich environments, giving them a unique ability to interact with and potentially detoxify mercury compounds. This makes them excellent candidates for bioremediation efforts." ?? Learn more ??https://lnkd.in/gKU8ttps
