?? SIRWASH Dialogue in Brasilia: Fostering South-South Exchange ?? At a recent SIRWASH event in Brazil, we took a major step forward in both showcasing the impact of SIRWASH and fostering South-South collaborations. Countries from across Latin America and beyond came together to discuss key results of joint efforts in rural WASH (Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene) while diving into knowledge sharing between regions. ?? ?????????????????? ???? ??????????-?????????? ??????????????????????? One of the highlights of the event was the presentation by Chaiwe Mushauko, WASH, Climate Change, Biochar Expert, who presented the Sub-Saharan Africa context. Her insights into rural WASH challenges and solutions in Africa provided a rich comparison to the diverse approaches being implemented in Latin America. This South-South exchange is at the heart of SIRWASH’s mission: bringing together regions with similar challenges to learn from each other and drive innovation forward. ?? ?????? ?????????????????? ???????? ?????? ????????????????: ? Diversity in Rural WASH Services:? Latin America is far from homogeneous when it comes to WASH services. Each country—and even regions within countries—faces unique socio-economic and environmental conditions that shape how they approach clean water and sanitation.?As Chaiwe pointed out, this is also true in Sub-Saharan Africa, where diverse service options are essential to addressing local needs. ?Adapting Technology to Local Contexts:? From remote monitoring tools to data collection systems, Latin America is experimenting with new technologies for rural WASH management. These innovations are essential for improving service delivery, and there is immense potential to adapt and expand these tools in Africa as well. ?The Critical Role of Governance:? Strengthening regulatory frameworks and fostering multi-stakeholder partnerships are essential to the success of WASH services, both in Latin America and Sub-Saharan Africa. Decentralizing governance and ensuring transparent funding were identified as key priorities—issues that remain central to the discussions across both regions. ?? ???????????????? ?????????????? ?????? ?? ???????????? ???????????? This event was a powerful reminder of how South-South cooperation can accelerate progress toward sustainable WASH solutions. By exchanging lessons learned between Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and other regions, we’re laying the groundwork for more resilient and effective rural water and sanitation systems worldwide. Most of us don't even think about it when we take a morning shower, flush the toilet or brew a coffee with #water. But every day almost 1 billion people have to walk miles to get access to clean water and almost 2 billion don't have access to a toilet. This keeps #children out of schools (because they collect water), it spreads diseases and locks people, especially women, in #poverty, unable to unleash their potential and dreams. This #challenge cannot be solved by neither #money nor #technology alone. It can only be solved by combining the two with people's #creativity, #imagination, #entrepreneurial thinking, drive for a better #life, and our ability to #collaborate. That is why we are excited to once again welcome you to one of the most significant and ambitious #WASH events of the year, I4WASH – KENYA 2024, 16-19 October 2024: Four days that can change the life for millions. https://lnkd.in/ewYk--Bj Another great article from the International Water Association newspaper about #Inclusive #urban #sanitation with interviews from sanitation specialists in emerging countries. Some highlights "Yvonne Magawa: Having recognised that most of the urban population relies on non-sewered sanitation, ESAWAS, as a network of WSS regulators, has begun a paradigm shift towards inclusive sanitation. In 2018, ESAWAS formulated a regulatory framework and strategy to incorporate non-sewered sanitation into regulation." Sylvain Usher from the Association Africaine de l'Eau et de l'Assainissement I had the chance to make him visit our first installation of WeCo - Toilet. "During decolonisation of most of the African countries in the 1960s, our newly designated heads of states were mainly concerned about giving access to potable water to the population of newly constructed cities, putting together potable water treatment plants and networks and creating the potable water utilities. Thinking about where the used water would go was not the main preoccupation so long as there was a river or sea where the wastewater could be disposed. No awareness was raised about the potential pollution of the environment. At the beginning of urbanisation during this period, there was slow migration to the cities. The World Bank estimates that inadequate sanitation costs African countries billions of dollars each year in lost GDP. ?The concept of inclusive urban sanitation is spreading across Africa. Its urgent implementation is required to avoid a hygiene calamity exacerbated by the consequences of climate change." Neeta Pokhrel: "Also, the drivers for sanitation are not being recognised by investors. The public are not putting politicians under pressure to invest in sanitation, and this is exacerbated by short political cycles. Because the demand is not there, the investment is not there. Investment depends on cost recovery. Sanitation for many people means investment in sewers. Sewers are costly and politicians don’t press for them because they would rather invest in more visible things, such as water supply, bridges, roads, and railways. We need to recognise that there is a cost to not investing in sanitation. We need to make stakeholders aware of the economic losses from the health impacts of poor sanitation." Note that Boston Consulting Group (BCG) considers that the ROI from investing in sanitation is for 1 USD invested, 5 USD given back to the investor. And if with WeCo - Toilet we want to provide sustainable, hygienic safe and inclusive #sanitation solutions to everyone, everywhere, we can also offer great opportunities to investors with our fundraising campaign ([email protected]). Remember that United Nations COP28 UAE highlighted the important strides for water SIWI - Stockholm International Water Institute that will keep pushing for #water 's central role in #climate action.

???????????????????????? ?????????? ?????????????? ??????????: ?? ???????????? ?????????????? ?????????? In our quest for sustainable development, access to clean water and sanitation remains a critical challenge. However, recent global efforts have shown remarkable progress: - 70 million people gained access to sustainable drinking water since 2008 - 54.8 million benefited from improved sanitation facilities - $590 million in new funding mobilized since 2018 Last year alone, we saw: - 5.2 million people gain access to sustainable drinking water - 4 million receive improved sanitation services - $133 million mobilized for water and sanitation sectors These numbers represent more than statistics – they're stories of transformed lives, improved health, and new opportunities. From empowering local communities in Senegal to training water professionals in Indonesia, and supporting women entrepreneurs in Madagascar, these initiatives are making a real difference. Looking ahead, the goal is to reach an additional 22 million people with sustainable water services by 2027. While challenges remain, these successes prove that with continued effort and innovation, a water-secure future for all is within reach. #WaterSecurity #SustainableDevelopment #GlobalImpact ?????????? ???????? to Read More

Community-Led Interventions for Food Security: Building Resilience and Sustainable Urban Agriculture in Low-Income Areas - Bright Chimezie Irem Food insecurity is a growing challenge in Nigeria and across sub-Saharan Africa, especially in urban low-income areas. In many neighborhoods, fresh, affordable food is scarce, with families spending over 50% of their income on food. Limited land, climate change, and high unemployment add to the issue. But a solution is emerging: community-led hydroponic farming. This soilless system grows crops with nutrient-rich water, making it possible to produce food year-round, even in small urban spaces like rooftops and vacant lots. Hydroponics offers more fresh food, saves water, and provides stable income. ?? How this Works: Community Training: Local women, youth, and farmers learn hydroponic techniques, including setup, crop care, and maintenance. Partnerships: NGOs and local community groups offer small grants, tools, and nutrient supplies to help communities start their hydroponic farms. Urban Farm Networks: Neighborhood groups manage farms, sharing knowledge and supporting each other for long-term success. Impact So Far: ?? Increased Food Access: Hydroponic farms produce up to 50% more food per square meter than traditional farms, making fresh vegetables more available and reducing household food costs by up to 20%. ?? Income and Employment: Families can sell surplus crops, adding 15% more income each month. Over 5,000 women and youth have found work through hydroponic farming. ?? Water Savings: These farms use up to 90% less water than traditional farming, crucial for water-scarce regions. ?? Health Benefits: More fresh produce has improved nutrition, with a 10% drop in malnutrition among children. Why this Matters: Hydroponic farming empowers low-income communities to control their food supply and improve their lives. This initiative brings fresh food to cities, creates jobs, saves water, and strengthens families against food and climate challenges. It’s a model that can expand across Africa, building a more food-secure future. Connecting with us or with a local community project near you will help you to explore how we can make #foodsecurity a reality in Africa through community-powered, sustainable farming...and thereby, grow stronger and healthier communities. #FoodSecurity #UrbanAgriculture #HydroponicsForGood #SustainableFarming #ClimateResilience #CommunityEmpowerment #AgritechAfrica #YouthEmpowermentAfrica #DataDrivenImpact FAO

On behalf of Megh Pyne Abhiyan (MPA), I attended a stakeholder consultation on "Climate Resilient Rural Sanitation" in New Delhi on September 13, 2024. The focus was on developing sustainable sanitation solutions for rural areas. MPA highlighted the need for disaster-resilient and ecologically sustainable technologies in flood-prone and vulnerable regions of northeast and eastern India. Advocating for the adoption of Phaydemand Shauchalay (EcoSan, Urine Diverting Dry Toilet), a sanitation system designed to function during floods and support sustainable excreta management. MPA's advocacy is rooted in the effective functioning of Phaydemand Shauchalays in Naya Tola Bhishambharpur village, Bhagwanpur panchayat, Nautan block, Pashchim (West) Champaran district, where it has provided safe sanitation since 2017, even during the floods of 2017, 2018, 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024. Its effectiveness led to the adoption of the system by several more households in 2024, with support from DCB Bank, Mumbai. Drawing from MPA’s experiences, my input emphasized the following points - - Disaster-resilient and ecologically sustainable sanitation technology (DRESST) is crucial to ensure communities maintain safe access to sanitation, even during floods. Traditional twin leach pit toilets often fail when submerged, but the design of Phaydemand Shauchalay mitigates these risks. - The need for eco-friendly waste management was stressed. DRESST aligns with ecological sustainability by promoting safe waste use and composting methods that avoid groundwater pollution and prevent further ecological damage in flood-prone areas. - DRESST highlights the importance of tailoring sanitation solutions to local geographical and climatic conditions. It reflects the recognition that in flood-prone regions, sanitation strategies must integrate resilience and sustainability to remain viable in the long term. ? MPA’s contributions to the consultation reflected the broader need to rethink rural sanitation in India through a climate-resilient lens. The focus on alternatives like Phaydemand Shauchalay brought attention to the fact that sanitation systems must not only address immediate public health concerns but also align with the ecological realities and disaster risks faced by communities in flood-prone areas. There is a clear need to align efforts, experiences, and perspectives to ensure the development, promotion, and adoption of appropriate sanitation technologies in India's climate-vulnerable regions. If the need for disaster-resilient and ecologically sustainable sanitation is not raised as a collective concern, the ongoing issue of inadequate access to safe sanitation in climate-vulnerable areas will persist. Over time, this lack of action will lead to the problem becoming overlooked or ignored, even though it will continue to affect these regions. Integrating Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) with Modern WASH Strategies: Enhancing Sustainability and Community Engagement in Africa In the realm of Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene initiatives across Africa, there exists a compelling opportunity to integrate TEK into contemporary approaches. TEK represents indigenous wisdom and practices that have sustained communities for generations, offering profound insights into sustainable water management, sanitation, and hygiene practices. Preserving Wisdom, Enhancing Resilience Africa's diverse cultures include traditional practices that align closely with ecological principles. These practices often emphasize holistic natural resource management, ensuring resilience against environmental challenges. Integrating TEK into WASH strategies not only preserves cultural heritage but also enhances the sustainability and effectiveness of interventions. Harnessing Local Solutions Local communities possess unique insights into their environments and have developed practices to ensure water availability and sanitation in harmony with nature. For example, traditional rainwater harvesting methods, natural filtration systems, and communal sanitation practices are deeply rooted in local knowledge systems. Incorporating these methods into modern WASH initiatives can lead to more contextually appropriate solutions that resonate with communities. Strengthening Community Engagement TEK fosters community ownership and participation in WASH projects. By acknowledging and respecting traditional knowledge, stakeholders can build trust and collaboration. Empowering communities to lead and innovate based on their own insights not only enhances project sustainability but also promotes cultural sensitivity and equity in development efforts. Case Studies and Success Stories Numerous initiatives across Africa illustrate the transformative potential of integrating TEK into WASH programs. In Uganda, for instance, community-led initiatives have revitalized ancient water management practices, resulting in improved water quality and availability. In Kenya, partnerships with local elders have revitalized traditional hygiene practices, significantly reducing waterborne diseases in rural areas. Moving Forward: Strategies for Integration To effectively integrate TEK into WASH strategies, stakeholders must engage in meaningful dialogue with local communities and traditional leaders. This involves conducting participatory assessments to understand existing practices, adapting technologies to fit local contexts, and supporting knowledge exchange between generations. This approach respects cultural heritage while strengthening the effectiveness and relevance of development efforts across diverse African landscapes. Integrating TEK with modern WASH strategies presents a promising pathway to sustainable development in Africa, fostering resilience, enhancing community engagement, and ensuring the longevity of WASH interventions.
