Yesterday at the United Nations, 193 countries adopted the 'Pact for the Future' - a once-in-a-generation and landmark international commitment to ensure today’s decisions prioritize the well-being of future generations. The document, which includes a 'Digital Compact' and a 'Declaration on Future Generations', commits to 56 specific actions in 5 years, around: ?? Advancing sustainable development and its financing ?? Promoting peace and security ?? Supporting science, technology and digital innovation to be equitable and accessible ?? Addressing youth and future generations ? ?Transforming global governance. The Pact has a strong commitment to reforming the international financial systems and architecture and represents a step change in financing the SDG’s. Our CEO, Kimberley Abbott has been at the UN over the past days participating in discussions and had this to say about the Pact for the Future: “At Vested Impact, we wholeheartedly support the global reaffirmation that the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) represent the most comprehensive, far-reaching, and people-centered blueprint for transformative action, and through our work, we are aligned with the ambitious commitment to closing the SDG financing gap and championing the reform of the international financial system. There are moments that feel somewhat historic. And to be at the United Nations the past few days during the action days and finalisation of the landmark 'Pact for the Future', feels like one of them. Whilst, like most UN Declarations, it ended up watered down with slightly vague commitments, all in all the Pact is a huge step change with the first ever pledge from all member states to protect the future generations, and huge focus on reforming the international financial system and architecture, which is needed for us to solve the interconnected challenges we face. Overall, I sat in the UN with hope, and the first few paragraphs of the Pact for Future I think leave an air of optimism. Here they are: “We, the Heads of State and Government, representing the peoples of the world, have gathered at United Nations Headquarters to protect the needs and interests of present and future generations through the actions in this Pact for the Future. We are at a time of profound global transformation. We are confronted by rising catastrophic and existential risks, many caused by the choices we make. Fellow human beings are enduring terrible suffering. If we do not change course, we risk tipping into a future of persistent crisis and breakdown. Yet this is also a moment of hope and opportunity. The African Union being launched as at 2002 Durban Summit, South Africa. With the Objective to replace the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which was established on May 25, 1963, in Addis Ababa by 32 signatory governments. An Alliance for the Future - A proposal for a strategic partnership ?? It has never been more important for people and organisations to learn how to navigate uncertainty, build optimism for the future and create meaningful change. This is widely recognised globally. Multilateral organisations, such as the UN, OECD, and the EU, as well as many countries, have put the future and future capabilities at the top of their agendas. The UN has just launched their UN 2.0 plan. Here, they identify five core capabilities that are necessary to create positive change in the future. Foresight, a concrete ability to work actively with potential futures, is one of the five. Furthermore, the UN General Assembly will be held in September this year under the banner ‘Summit of the Future’, where both a Pact for the Future and a Declaration on Future Generations will be launched to build on and revitalise the SDGs. The UN firmly states that we need more futures-oriented thinking and to build capacity in this area – and commit ourselves to it. At the same time, there is a growing anxiety surrounding the future in society, especially among young people. We need to address this by equipping them with the tools to explore different plausible futures, understand the dynamics that shape the future, and act on it. This aims to empower youth, foster optimism, and stimulate imagination for the benefit of national innovation, competitiveness, well-being and mental health. Recently, our Summit of the Future Pledge Network, an informal collective of more than 100 cross-disciplinary leaders, convened for monthly updates and insights from around the world: ?? We celebrated our recent successes from the Pledge Network across different regions - we heard about Kenneth Nsah (Mala), PhD championing the government of Cameroon, Valeria Colunga, Abril C., Marimer Baltazar and Mercedes Baltazar Lobato in starting a civil society coalition in Mexico, and James Balzer, MSusDev MPP, Cheryl Doig, Daouia Chalali, Deyanira J M., developing an intergenerational fairness evaluation framework for city governments' policies in Melbourne. ?? We received a comprehensive update on the Summit of the Future agenda and the current state of the Declaration on Future Generations. ?? We heard insightful deep dives about intergenerational thinking in New Zealand and the upcoming Finnish Youth Summit of the Future - many thanks to Thomas Blakie and Paula P?ttikangas. ?? I had the opportunity to attend (virtually) the "Advancing #SDGs through Sustainable and Just Economic Transformation" event, hosted by the European Economic and Social Committee. It was very energetic and insightful, with worries escalating, especially since the latest SDG report indicated that most goals were stagnant, and some were even worsening. Moreover, the role of the EU was emphasized by several panelists, as it is expected to "show the way," yet there are concerns about its failure to do so. Several key points were highlighted, including the increase of the far right in the political landscape, ongoing wars, and the persistent challenge of financing. I won't sugarcoat it; it was a tough discussion to hear, with the horizon appearing unclear and trends casting shadows. However, we can still take action! #Misinformation was identified as a key issue, which is why I'm posting this. I invite everyone to discuss within their professional circles whether the SDGs are part of their #CSR plan, if there are appropriate indicators to track progress, and if there are sufficient mechanisms to advance them. While politics play a significant role, there's still much we can do on the ground level. As Laurent Bontoux, one of the panelists, said, let's not lack imagination!
