In our latest report, we concluded that over 60% of Indian soonicorn founders do not hail from IITs, and over 77% have a non-IIM background! Let’s decode the educational background of India’s soonicorn founders ?? ?? According to the analysis of 213 soonicorn founders, over 90% graduated with some form of a degree in an institution in India and the rest graduated abroad. ?? Within this group, nearly 80% got engineering degrees (BTech and BE), only 3% pursued a degree each in commerce and economics, and more than 5% of the soonicorn founders opted for a degree in science. Less than 2% of these founders opted for BBA. ?? The fact that over 60% soonicorn founders come from a non-IIT background shows that despite a prestigious university degree being a plus for startup founders, it has not been a deciding factor for investors anymore. ?? Of the top 9 institutes offering an undergrad degree from where these soonicorns founders have graduated, 6 are IITs. ?? BITS Pilani is producing more startups than IIT Bombay. Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani reported almost 300 startups, while the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay saw around 80. That’s a 4x difference. As an IIT Bombay graduate, this comparison hits close to home. While working on LanguifyAI and interviewing students from both institutions, I observed some key reasons behind this gap: [1] No Attendance at BITS → At BITS Pilani, with no mandatory attendance rules, students have the time to build, experiment, and take risks.? → In 2022, BITS went further, allowing students and faculty to take a one-year gap to launch startups.? → The result? 1,900+ startups, including 13 unicorns till date. [2] The Safe Net at IIT Bombay → IIT Bombay is full of brilliant minds, but over 80% of its grads choose secure career paths— Master’s, PhDs, or high-paying jobs abroad.? → The reason? Many of us come from less financially secure backgrounds, where the pressure to ensure stability often outweighs the risk of entrepreneurship. [3] Financial Comfort → BITS Pilani’s higher fees mean many students come from financially stable backgrounds.? → This financial cushion gives them the luxury to take risks that others can’t afford.? → That’s a powerful advantage in a world where 9 out of 10 startups fail. There is a strong hope in the room for a better world. Over 150 students and faculty members, at this stellar Young Entrepreneurs’ BootCamp (YEB) at BITS Pilani by the amazing teams at BITS, Goa campus. Interestingly, when I asked them about their goals and ambitions, more than half of these students spoke about a better world, social equality, access to PWDs, Waste management, climate change and so much more that put a smile on my face, and those of senior members present in the audience. These folks will go on to build a strong sense of purpose, create sustainable ventures, some may even catalyze unprecedented social value. I am sure that few of these students would become advocates for mitigating climate change. We have less time ( ~ 5 years or less) and as the last slide said “Goals are dreams with a deadline”. Again, Thanks to the entire team at BITS for this opportunity, for creating this cohort of extremely bright individuals. Insights from My Visit to IIM Bangalore During Independence Day Weekend This week, as we celebrate 78 years of Independence, I had the privilege of visiting Prof. Suresh Bhagavatula’s PGP class at Indian Institute of Management Bangalore along with Sachidananda Benegal. The session was an excellent opportunity to engage with students who as part of their coursework, are in the process of creating ventures, interacting with diverse user groups, and developing MVPs. Listening to these young minds, I couldn’t help but reflect on how they’re shaping the future of our nation. Their emphasis on using technology—ordering everything from FMCG products to learning a new language to food through smartphones—is a testament to how rapidly consumer behavior is evolving in India. These changes begin in consumer businesses but inevitably influence the B2B sector as well. What is working in personal life is eventually will also come in the professional life ;) However, this visit also got me thinking about the balance we need to strike. While there’s much focus on business models driven by current momentum and venture capital, we must also draw inspiration from local entrepreneurs who are building sustainable, revenue-driven, and scalable businesses. True independence, after all, lies in long-term, self-sustaining growth. One key takeaway from this experience is the importance of observing what’s happening around us. By understanding these shifts in behavior and market dynamics, we can better navigate the path forward. Kudos to the students and Prof. Suresh for fostering such forward-thinking discussions. It was an inspiring way to mark this significant week. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) is the desire of many young people, but to make this dream come true, they must pass the JEE Main and Advanced exams. Thousands of students from all across India take the IIT JEE entrance exam each year in an attempt to pass and get into one of the IITs. However, only a small number of the brightest minds succeed in clearing the IIT JEE entrance exam. Today, we will talk about the incredible journey of Prudhvi Tej Immadi, the top scorer of the IIT-JEE, who is an inspiration to many and whose journey is distinct from that of any other IIT alumnus. He attended IIT Bombay to complete his electrical engineering degree after passing the 2011 IIT-JEE with an AIR 1. Prudhvi Tej Immadi is an Andhra Pradesh native from Dwaraka Tirumala. Even before the 2014 placement season started, he received an offer from Samsung in South Korea, where he would be paid Rs 70 lakh annually. He received the Aditya Birla Scholarship at IIT Bombay in the same year. In 2016, Prudhvi Tej Immadi went back to India and began preparing for the UPSC. He used to study for more than 14 hours per day. He spent much of his time revising the syllabus and solving previous years' exams. In the UPSC exam, he was successful in getting an AIR 24. He is now the chairman and managing director of the Andhra Pradesh Eastern Power Distribution Company Limited at the moment (APEPDCL). During his time as APTRANSCO's joint managing director, he was instrumental in the company's acquisition of reasonably priced power from the open market. IAS Prudhvi Tej Immadi, an IIT alumnus and a source of inspiration for many, shared his life narrative and the techniques he used to prepare for two of the most difficult exams in the country.
