Progress in the petition we filed (together with the Association of Ethiopian Jews, the Public Committee Against Torture and the Tebeka Association) demanding a reduction in the scope of the authority given to the police to detain people on the street for the purpose of presenting an ID card. Today, the High Court of Justice ordered the police to explain why it refuses to change its procedure based on the following points, as we demanded in the petition: -Revoke the authority of police officers to check ID cards due to the policeman's subjective fear of a person's behavior or presence in a certain place. - Prohibit delay beyond a reasonable time required for identification. - An inspection at the police terminal will be carried out only for the purpose of verifying the details of the certificate. - No further policing activities may be carried out in the absence of suspicion of committing an offense. We filed the petition last year in order to curb the increasing abuse of these powers, after a long period in which the Israel Police failed to comply with the High Court of Justice directives from 2021, which imposed a series of essential restrictions. Over the past year, the practice of detaining, by the police, has been exerted in an intensified manner not only against Ethiopian immigrants, Arabs, and those with a Mizrahi appearance, but also against participants in demonstrations against government policy. We demand the police act in accordance with the provisions of the ruling in order to prevent civilians from being labeled as suspects out of political persecution and racial profiling.

On the Right to Die (like the trees) under the European Convention on Human Rights A year ago, I recommended reading the article by Dániel Karsai on Verfassungsblog "The Right To Die Like The Trees - Standing" on the case now decided by the European Court of Human Rights https://lnkd.in/dJX9btGr. If you are interested in the scope of #HumanRights under the #EuropeanConventiononumanRights, I recommend reading the decision below. If you are interested in whether law and ethics always look in the same direction, also read the blog post on the Verfassungsblog.? #internatinallaw #ECHR

Political instability is never good for any country, and on top of that, when the state writ is challenged every other day, then it shows a dark picture. Pakistan has been again in the midst of chaos, and probably it was never out of it, but crime and terrorist activities are on the rise again. What we have seen in the attack on the Parachinar convoy is not just a religious divide between Shia and Sunni surfaced once again; it is the utmost failure of the law enforcement agencies to do one job that they are entitled to do. Monopoly over force should only be with the state itself, and that’s the primary reason for the existence of the state itself, but once the state fails to do it, you can see gangs, mafia, and militias growing everywhere, and that’s what is happening in Pakistan. From dacoit in Sindh to attacks on law enforcement agencies to the re-emergence of Taliban in tribal areas to BLP to attack the convoys. The state has failed and the Policymakers have just turned a blind eye to it. Instead, they are focused on one political party and sabotaging it. To stop it, they are, in the literal sense, emptying the capital city. Students from their hostels are asked to vacate; there would be a roadblock, and phone services would be blocked, all to stop a political party from protesting. Both sides need to Just get a breather; both sides need to look at what they are doing. There are severe issues at hand; focus on those; even inside KP, there is a mess which needs to be sorted out. The underlying issue at hand is that the de facto rulers and Policymakers, aka establishment, are playing, and both sides are just pawns in a larger game. They need to sit and think about what is happening, and how to stop it at least there should be some degree of peace and stability in this state of Pakistan, but the thing is when narrow interests become a priority that’s when things really start to deteriorate and everyone is there to have their piece of the pie.
