Exciting times in the UK fibre sector! ?? Netomnia is making impressive strides, aiming to cover 3 million UK premises by the end of 2025. What's driving this success? Strong leadership, focused expansion strategies, and solid backing from investors. In the highly competitive world of fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP), Netomnia has proven its resilience. The recent merger with Brsk and substantial financing clearly show they have the momentum to stay ahead. ?? By the numbers: - ? Serving 2.08 million UK premises - ? The UK, home to the world's first MVNO, Virgin Mobile, continues to boast a vibrant MVNO market. MVNOs offer affordable and flexible plans, making them attractive during economic uncertainty. CCS Insight's latest report highlights a significant 8% growth in the MVNO sector in 2023, compared to just 2% for the main network operators. With MVNOs now representing 18% of UK retail connections, the sector remains crucial amid cost-of-living concerns. However, the planned Vodafone-Three merger poses potential challenges and opportunities for MVNOs. Stay tuned as we monitor this dynamic market closely. Vodafone and VMO2 have announced an industry-changing deal to trade spectrum and extend their network sharing to the would-be enhanced Vodafone/Three network. - Extending the long-standing Vodafone/VMO2 Beacon network-sharing agreement to the enhanced Vodafone/Three network will allow VM02 to capitalise on the denser network and enhanced capacity in the merging companies' plans. This will provide a significant boost to VMO2's capacity and coverage (which the spectrum deal will improve further), and capacity in the industry as a whole - Vodafone/Three's 46% share of spectrum if the merger goes ahead would likely have been problematic for Ofcom. No detail has been given re the spectrum traded but it "reduces the current imbalances in spectrum holding between the UK’s mobile network operators". While BT's current 32% of spectrum won't change and is reasonable in a three-player market, they might argue that they are short of lower-band spectrum (important for coverage) and 5G spectrum (important for capacity) More detail in our note later today #Vodafone #VirginMediaO2 #Three #BT

Karen - look forward to the detailed note later but on first read this looks a smart, proactive and pragmatic approach to the necessary discussion about competitiveness in mobile network services in the UK. Leading the market resolution, rather that waiting for a regulatory imposed solution is also, in my view, the model that should be adopted in all markets across Europe. We have significantly enhanced network tools and funding / ownership models to facilitate effective service competition in the mobile market but increasingly out of date regulatory tools to support the necessary consolidation of investment in the industry that is essential to effective competition at the customer interface.

Following on from a comment by William Webb on yesterday’s post and article about #mobile wholesale, I came up with a possible scenario for how we might get to #openaccess #5G by non-regulatory means. I wonder if maybe an adventurous private equity company, utility or fibre telco makes an acquisition of an established MNO and its spectrum assets, and then does something interesting... For instance, imagine a scenario where the UK’s CMA stopping the proposed VF/3UK merger for competition reasons. (I think that would be a bad move, but not unlikely). But then, let’s say that a player like CityFibre raises more capital and buys 3UK instead, spinning off its retail business. It could then offer both FTTP and cellar wholesale - maybe just as an MVNO operation, but perhaps something more sophisticated for its ISP customers. This is all completely hypothetical - but it could be a way to transform the industry the same way FTTP has shaken up legacy wireline/cable markets Link to previous post & article: https://lnkd.in/eCNt_s_K
