The “recipe” of 13 leading biodiversity credit schemes finally uncovered! Learn all about how they calculate the number of potential credits project developers can register. The charts attached are extremely valuable to understand what enters into the “cooking” of biodiversity credits and what they represent. ? Simas Gradeckas (Bloom Labs) teamed up with us at The Biodiversity Footprint Intelligence Company (BioInt) and together with Giada Lampitelli, we upgraded his framework to analyse the indicators & metrics used by existing biodiversity credit standards & methodologies and shed light on the recipe of a sample of them. ? ?? If you missed posts on the cooking analogy, check out this post from Simas: https://lnkd.in/eTTucrAK Basically standards & methodologies require project developers to monitor a number of indicators: the “ingredients”. They are then combined through scheme-specific formulas, the “recipe”... ... to calculate how many potential credits, the “dishes” could be registered. A “nutriscore” is sometimes added to distinguish between credits of different quality, it is the “significance” in the slides attached. Basically, a biodiversity credit associated to very significant biodiversity (e.g. endangered species or ecosystems) has a good nutriscore (say “A”) whereas one associated to common biodiversity may have a lower nutriscore (say “E”). ? ?? For full descriptions of the elements displayed in the caption, please refer to the original article: https://lnkd.in/endpsn2d ?? Let’s go through one scheme together, for instance Earthly, the first one on the slides (the order has no particular logic). ? 1?? The ingredients used to estimate potential credits involve both Ecosystem condition (Habitat condition) and Other (Habitat distinctiveness, Habitat strategic significance, 3 indicators on Risk). More details in the database linked in comments ??? ? 2?? As a consequence, the dish belongs to “Weighted ecosystem extent” ? 3?? The Uplift is measured Relative to the initial condition of the project ? 4?? The indicators involved in the ingredients are Fixed and project developers have no flexibility to choose their own ? 5?? Both preservation and restoration credits can be registered ? 6?? The number of units is based on an area of 9 m2 and involve quality and risks (the ingredients) ? 7?? The preservation or restoration is expected to be maintained over 30 years, the period explicitly associated to the credit ? 8?? Significance is integrated directly into credit calculation (unlike for instance Verra’s standard whose latest draft planned to have different categories of credit rating depending on their significance) ? ? ?? What do you expect in terms of trends for each characteristics of credit “recipes” (e.g. more Relative or Absolute Uplift measurement systems)? And what do you believe is the best choice each time?
Like when learning to cook it will take some trial and error considering how many ingredients there are to play with! Some might get burned on the way but I am sure others will find that right balance and simplicity needed to be replicated and enjoyed!
great article - to truly be a recipe page though you need at least twice the amount of text at the beginning on your life and personal journey and how important this recipe was to your nan.
This is so helpful! Each scheme generates units - are all units equal or are some more equal than others?
