Navigating a role outside your target department while waiting for an opportunity can feel challenging. But this situation offers unique growth opportunities that can ultimately strengthen your candidacy. Working outside HR has allowed me to gain a broader skill set, a more holistic understanding of the company, and insight into different workflows, challenges, and priorities. Here are a few strategies that have helped me make the most of this time: ?? Leverage Learning Opportunities:?Every department has valuable skills and knowledge to offer. By working in a different area, I've gained insights into the organization that will be beneficial when I move into HR. I’ve learned about departmental workflows, cross-functional dependencies, and organizational culture firsthand, all of which will inform my future HR role by giving me a clearer sense of employee needs and departmental collaboration. ?? Stay Connected with HR Professionals:?Regularly networking with HR colleagues has been invaluable. These connections not only keep me updated on trends and best practices in HR but also allow me to showcase my interest and dedication to transitioning into the field. ?? Develop Transferable Skills:?Skills such as communication, relationship-building, and project management are valuable in any department. By enhancing these skills in my current role, I’m preparing myself to transition seamlessly into HR when the opportunity arises ?? Maintain a Positive Mindset and Embrace Patience:?It's easy to feel impatient while waiting for your dream role, but each step is an investment in your future. By focusing on growth and seeing each task as part of the bigger picture, I'm creating a journey that’s enriching both personally and professionally. To anyone in a similar situation, I’d encourage you to make the most of your current role, even if it isn’t exactly where you want to be. Build relationships, learn the nuances of different departments, and keep adding skills that will support your future goals. Every step, even outside your ideal field, can be a building block toward where you want to be! #continouslearning ??#professionalgrowth CHRP(K)Gladys Sunda

1994: Started my career as an Executive Assistant without any big degree. 2024: Running an award-winning global HR consulting firm, impacting 50+ brands & building a team. From knowing nothing about HR to leading HR departments at Fortune 500 companies, I’ve come a long way. My top 3 pieces of learnings from my 30 year career ?? (after 2+ decades of an HR career & having seen 1000s of careers) 1/ ?????????????? ?????????? ??????????. ???????????? ????????????. I don’t have a college degree in HR. I never tried to get one. I started learning about HR at my first job & never stopped. That’s the only reason I kept growing. Passion is mandatory. The degree isn’t. Choose what you are passionate about, not just the subject you graduated in. 2/ ???????? ?????? ???????????????????? ????????????????/????????????. A lot of career success can be directly attributed to the kind of manager you have. Look for managers that uplift and support you, not those who put you down. Make having a positive manager an important criterion for staying in a job, along with growth and salary package. 3/ ???????????????? ??????’?? ???????? ???????????? ???? ?????? ??????????????????. There is a word in the dictionary for people at the workplace - Colleague. Use that word. Don’t make everyone a friend. Develop professional relationships. Never hesitate to set up boundaries. ------------------------------------- ?? BONUS: Compare your career graph to someone else’s only if you wish to be miserable. Remember, it’s not a race. Everyone has a different starting point. What’s your #1 career mantra? I would love to know in the comments section. #journey #entrepreneur #success #hr

Have you ever felt a pull towards a different career path? That was me in sales, constantly drawn to Human Resources. Despite my background in Agricultural Economics, I found myself more interested in recruitment and employee relations. One day, the Head of Human Resources, Uduma E. noticed my enthusiasm and talent. He said something to me which I have not forgotten till this day: “Most people were made HR, Few were born HR. Chidiogo, you are born HR.” He saw potential in me and facilitated my transfer to the HR department. This was the turning point that set me on the path to where I am today. Transitioning into HR was not without its challenges. Without a HR background, I felt like I was starting from scratch. I spent endless hours reading online resources, attending beginner HR trainings, and joining HR communities to build my knowledge. Self-doubt crept in often. There were moments when I questioned my decision. The hardest part was applying my existing skills in a completely new context. While my interpersonal and communication skills were transferable, understanding how to utilize them effectively in HR took time and practice. I had to master Microsoft Office tools and other HR-specific software, which was daunting at first. Despite these obstacles, my determination to succeed kept me going. Over the years, I have made conscious steps to grow and develop myself in the HR Profession. I have gained my MBA, the SPHRi certification from HRCI amongst other certifications. I have also gained expertise in more areas of HR like performance management, compensation & benefits, disciplinary & grievance management, change management, design thinking, industrial relations, employee relationships amongst others. I have also gone on to provide mentorship to others and I have seen progress in their careers. My story is proof that with passion and the right opportunities, you can pivot your career and find fulfillment in a new field. What challenges have you faced in your career transition? Share your experiences in the comments below! #careergrowthstory #careertransition #personaldevelopment #careerswithchi

This article struck a chord in me when I stumbled upon it today, especially on the occasion of International Human Resources Day. My career, for most part, has been a serendipitous journey where until my 40s, I explored several roles, right from training, process management, ISO audits, service delivery, learning content development, sales & business development. And then I hit upon my first speed breaker and a career plateau. This is the time I decided to get into the field of Human Resources. Almost everyone I knew, dissuaded me, however I had a deep conviction that I had the necessary mindset and intent where I can make a difference in this world. Nearly 10 years since then, I have managed to carve a decent niche, albeit in specific areas. I did a few professional certifications, reconnected with my mentors and ex-colleagues who knew me and my unique capabilities. I'm grateful to a few leaders who took their chances with me by giving me my initial roles in HR that has helped me come this far. This post is specially for those like me who want to make a headway into HR but are daunted about not having an MBA or an HR network. Connect with your mentors. Identify your personal brand and what is it that "you" will bring to the table. Intensify your intent and make every effort to connect and qualify. Volunteer yourself for HR assignments. And most of all reinforce your innermost aspiration on why you want to get into HR. Keep your faith and you will make it eventually! Happy #internationalhumanresourcesday!
