In many cases, we assume that our cyber risk stops at with attacks such as phishing, ransomware, and malware. However, as technology advances, there are a variety of ways in which your business could be at risk. For example, as we celebrate #WorldPhotoDay, we want to spotlight the dangers that AI-generated content and deepfakes can pose. What does that mean? Imagine you get a text from your boss asking for a gift card to pay a client. That's pretty obviously a phishing scam, and can be easily verified with a quick call to your boss using a trusted phone number. Now, what happens if you have a scheduled video call with your boss and they ask you for a gift card to pay clients during that call? You may see their face, hear their voice, but it could all be a deepfake meant to steal money from the company. This does not mean that you have to be wary of every single call that comes your way, but it does mean that you should look out for odd requests that you can verify over a different means of communication. If your "boss" uses photos or videos to request something extremely out of the ordinary, this might be a sign to verify the request with others or different communication. Are they asking you to share access to sensitive data that they already have access to? Are they asking you to withdraw a large amount of money? Are they unable to answer simple business-related questions? On a lighter note, we thought it would be fun to compare an AI-generated photo with a stock image -- let us know in the comments if you can discern which is which! If you’re interested in learning more, here’s an article from the New York Institute of Technology discussing how deep fakes work and what some of the risks are, https://lnkd.in/dTBmKi3k: #WorldPhotoDay #ImpactOfAI

Managing Threats When Everyone is on Vacation We are now knee-deep in the western Ramadan, in which many individuals are out of the office for the next two weeks. Security teams can be sparse in coverage during this time and attackers know this. Dark Reading shared some great tips on handling incidents during this time. Here are three tips from the article: -Create a plan in advance. Identify a call chain, escalation criteria, and authorized actions. -Freeze changes for critical systems. No one wants another CrowdStrike update deploying and taking systems down at the end of the year. -Verify time-sensitive or urgent requests during this time. Don't get caught in a gift card scam or providing your creds to a bad guy right before the holiday. Stay vigilant. https://lnkd.in/eyd5uGzw #cybersecurity #networkdefense #phishing #incidentresponse #ciso #vciso #catchphish

Ever received an email from a "CEO" asking for a gift card? ?? You’re not alone! ??? Tips for Phishing Awareness: Verify the Sender: Always check the email address. Scammers often use addresses that look similar to legitimate ones. Look for Red Flags: Be wary of emails with urgent requests, poor grammar, or unusual links. Don’t Click Links: Hover over links to see where they lead before clicking. If it seems off, don’t risk it! Confirm with a Call: If you receive a suspicious request, reach out directly to the person (using a known contact method) to verify. Report Suspicious Emails: If you suspect phishing, report it to your IT department or email provider. Stay safe out there, and remember: if it sounds too good to be true (or too weird), it probably is! ???? #PhishingAwareness #CyberSecurity #StaySafe

?? Alert: Targeted SMS Phishing (Smishing) Attempt ?? Today, I encountered an interesting smshing attempt that stood out due to its unusually targeted nature. The message referenced both my name and my boss's name, making it seem more credible than the typical generic phishing attempts we often see. I could tell right away that this was an issue because the area code of the phone number was from Illinois (no where near where I would expect it to be). But it’s somewhat disconcerting that all this information was put together to help make things look legitimate. Curious to see where it would lead, I decided to play along. The scammers were eventually looking for gift cards, a common request in many non-targeted smishing attempts. However, I was hoping for something more elaborate, like a request to reset my CEO's password due to a supposed lockout or something. In the end, their plan was foiled by asking for her secret identification password, as you can see in the screenshots. They didn’t have the password. I reported this to our IT group so we could let people know and heighten awareness for these kinds of things. ?? Key Takeaways: 1.????Always verify the source of unexpected messages using an out of band mechanism, especially those requesting sensitive information or actions. In my case we have established a secret code word that is only known internally (not that I really needed it here – but it’s a good layer to add to your security program). 2.????Be wary of messages that reference personal or organizational details, as this kind of information seems more readily available in our AI age. Scammers will use this information to gain your trust. 3.????Always report any suspicious activity to your IT or security team immediately. Stay vigilant to help protect your organization. #smshing #scammer #giftcards #security #cybersafe

Forget playing Scrabble! Is Your Password an Easy Guess? If you feel like you’re stuck in an endless game of “What’s my Password?” You’re not alone. We’ve all been there – staring at the login screen, cycling through our mental rolodex of passwords, hoping one will stick. It’s frustrating, time-consuming, and let’s face it, a bit embarrassing when you hit that “Forgot Password” link for the third time this week. But here’s the real kicker: while you’re struggling to remember if it was “Fluffy2018!” or “Fluffy2019!”, there’s a more critical question we should be asking ourselves: How secure is that password I can’t remember? Having a weak password is like leaving your front door wide open. Sure, it’s convenient, but it’s also a golden invitation for cybercriminals. So, what’s the game plan? 1?? Assess your current password strategy. Is it protecting you, or just frustrating you? 2?? Consider using a password manager. It’s like having a personal assistant for your digital life. 3?? Enable two-factor authentication wherever possible. It’s an extra step, but so is locking your car – and you do that without a second thought. How to Defend Your Business from Email Compromise According to the findings of the Cyber Security Breaches Survey, half of businesses (50%) and around a third of charities (32%) reported having experienced some form of cyber security breach or attack during 2023. The bigger the business and wealthier the charity, the more likely an attack. The type of attack most experienced was phishing. Next was others impersonating organisations in emails or online, and finally viruses and other malware. The average cost to businesses affected was around £1,200; when medium and large businesses are looked at separately, the average rises to around £10,830. But that, of course, doesn’t take into account disruption, inconvenience, and loss of reputation. Clearly, cybersecurity breaches are something to be avoided if at all possible. In this article we’re going to look specifically at business email compromise (BEC), which is a type of phishing attack. Of the organisations affected by a cyber security breach or attack during 2023, 84% of businesses and 83% of charities experienced such an attack.
