Searching for freelance graphic designer.. Skills needed: Day one graphic designer stuff but we did no research so think it's worth mentioning Must be house trained No agencies or people who know their worth Five days in our office in somewhere you don't live Send CV (because freelancers have CVs, right..?) and very specific folio (seriously you must show exactly what we're looking for, we have zero imagination and don't know how a design process works) to [email protected] -- This bullshit is what's making people feel the industry is crashing. It's not. There's loads of money being spent, just not by these losers. Talk to some actual people, book some calls, have conversations with agencies, clients, collaborators and make some real life connections. Don't be a #bumsonseats freelance designer. The truth is you could take the names of many freelance fashion & graphic designers and swap their social profiles about and the marketing message would still be true. Which means there is nothing that sets you apart. This is especially true if you have been a 'permalancer' ie working for years with the same brand ie there's lots of designers that could do what you do and so you become a commodity. Raising your rates becomes difficult. So there you are sat in midlife, wondering how the hell you're not earning what you desire, when you know deep down you are insanely talented. Then lack of confidence sets in and there you go, Boom! midlife crisis. It doesn't have to be this way, but you do need to find what your niche is. Who you work with. What result you get for them. How you do it. One of these has to be unique. It's the tricky bit. Ask for testimonials, get feedback, because you don't see what others see and that's the magic you need in your niche offer.
