I had a fantastic weekend at the Isle of Wight festival recently. I adore music, and the festival atmosphere is simply the best. Good friends, festival food, live music and sunshine vibes. However, as an introvert, upon returning home, I needed to shut the doors, sit with my cats in the garden, and decompress. I am so aware of this need, and I have scheduled this into my diary for many years after big events. I know I'll require time to recharge my batteries to show up for others - it's how I function. This is why when we onboard new clients, we invest time in understanding how you work and what your personality is like. We take time to learn how you like to start your mornings, how you like your time carved out during the day and what your most productive work pattern looks like. We coordinate diaries not just for the business's benefit, but primarily for the your own well-being. This could be carving out focus time for business development or prep time for important meetings. Sometimes you just need time to think!! Now that radio stations are loading up on holiday tunes, I always listen for my favorite two songs: "The Christmas Song" by Nat King Cole and "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg (which I frankly wish he had titled "A Toast to Time" but that's for another social post). For me, "Same Old Lang Syne" not only evokes holiday nostalgia but also provides a helpful lesson for our day-to-day professional lives (Stick with me!) Most of us already recognize the power of stories—including examples and case studies—to elevate communications. Stories do more than captivate; they increase oxytocin levels, fostering trust, empathy, and generosity. This is why songs like "Same Old Lang Syne," Harry Chapin's "Cat's in the Cradle," Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car," Frank Sinatra's "It Was a Very Good Year," Jim Croce's "Operator," Gladys Knight & the Pips' "Midnight Train to Georgia," Johnny Cash's "A Boy Named Sue," and roughly 64% of all Taylor Swift songs resonate so profoundly. Imagine Chapin singing, "Watching my son grow up depressed me so much," or Chapman referring to "historically marginalized communities." Very important ideas, but not nearly as compellingly conveyed. When you communicate professionally—in a speech, on social media, in a blog, within an article, and even in an op-ed—harness the potency of storytelling similarly to #makeyourwordsmatter. But some strategic guidance: 1?? Make sure your story is not just riveting but relevant. Your goal is to connect and engage, not simply capture and entertain. 2?? Double down on the point underpinning your story—especially very emotional stories—by following it up with point-reinforcing lines like "this story illustrates..." or "this example demonstrates..." 3?? Try to avoid adjectives as much as you can. Doing this will force your narrative hooks to be authentic, unique, and powerful, not generic and forgettable. Some topics of conversation are interesting to listen to, but not everyone has an opinion or relatable experience. Not this week, as we spent a bit of time on music and work: Do you want (or need) it playing in the background, or does it affect your concentration? Can you only have music on for certain tasks? Writing can be especially challenging when you're listening to lyrics, but it depends on whether you can shut it off and only hear the sound. For other activities, like cleaning? Bring it on. Some of our attendees even embrace the 25 minutes of work with a 5-minute "dance party" break ??. I can promise you that if this becomes my routine, no cameras will be on during those five minutes of "dancing." (You're welcome.) From the sublime to the serious, we also discussed elder care and early detection, as a number of us have had experiences with parents, siblings, and friends in this area. I'm getting to the age where I'm saying "I'm getting to the age" all too much, and I'm not alone, as was evident in our conversation. Every situation is different, and when dementia or Alzheimer's in involved, the challenges rise. Add in not being geographically close, you get the picture. Just on this call alone, there was plenty of support which shows that many more people go through this than you may realize. There are answers and people genuinely do want to support each other when you step into what may be very unfamiliar territory. (Don't be afraid to ask questions or for help!) I appreciate that a more important album is dropping today than this album cover of me and my tightly packed computer monitors. But let me tell ya, this has been a WEEK. Modern life is juggling a lot of balls. Some of them are plastic and can be dropped - others are glass. This week has been a lot of glass balls - higher temperature projects and moving house. Anything client-related is always a glass ball to me. I got into what I’m doing today to produce the highest quality content and deliver results. So when the heat turns up, I start to drop my plastic balls. - Routine - Exercise - Rest - Replying to personal WhatsApp’s - Eating dinner at a reasonable time - Keeping up my LinkedIn posting cadence When I drop these things, my stress levels are less manageable. I’m hoping next week I’ll be picking them up and having a more balanced week. I’m curious though, early-stage founders - how do you deal with these kinds of weeks?

Do 12, or more, of these statements resonate with you? If yes, I highly recommend reading this book (it’s also included in Spotify accounts). I am easily overwhelmed by strong sensory input. I seem to be aware of subtleties in my environment. Other people’s moods affect me. I tend to be very sensitive to pain. I find myself needing to withdraw during busy days, into bed or into a darkened room or any place where I can have some privacy and relief from stimulation. I am particularly sensitive to the effects of caffeine. I am easily overwhelmed by things like bright lights, strong smells, coarse fabrics, or sirens close by. I have a rich, complex inner life. I am made uncomfortable by loud noises. I am deeply moved by the arts or music. My nervous system sometimes feels so frazzled that I just have to go off by myself. I am conscientious. I startle easily. I get rattled when I have a lot to do in a short amount of time. When people are uncomfortable in a physical environment I tend to know what needs to be done to make it more comfortable (like changing the lighting or the seating). I am annoyed when people try to get me to do too many things at once. I try hard to avoid making mistakes or forgetting things. I make a point to avoid violent movies and TV shows. I become unpleasantly aroused when a lot is going on around me. Being very hungry creates a strong reaction in me,disrupting my concentration or mood. Changes in my life shake me up. I notice and enjoy delicate or fine scents, tastes, sounds, works of art. I find it unpleasant to have a lot going on at once. I make it a high priority to arrange my life to avoid upsetting or overwhelming situations. I am bothered by intense stimuli, like loud noises or chaotic scenes. When I must compete or be observed while performing a task, I become so nervous or shaky that I do much worse than I would otherwise. When I was a child, my parents or teachers seemed to see me as sensitive or shy. Mondays are for existential dread ?? and questioning your life choices. What better way to celebrate than to listen to an album that embodies our internal dialogue about mortality? ?? Let's kick this week off with something that'll make your Monday way less Monday-ish.?I started a Music Monday series sharing my current albums in rotation on my "Get ?? Done" playlist and I hope you'll appreciate it. I just discovered Blockhead's new album "Mortality is Lit!" released late last year and honestly??Mortality IS pretty lit especially when you make this the soundtrack for your life. Pretty sure I've played this 3 times in a row without skipping a track. Genre: Electronic/Instrumental Hip-Hop Energy: Smooth, Steady, & Upbeat Feels like if hip-hop decided to put on a suit but kept its sneakers on. The track names alone are gold... "All Dorks Go To Heaven" and "They Got Therapy For That." I mean, who doesn't need a little dose of tongue-in-cheek cheekiness to start off their week? What I love about this album is how Blockhead takes these old-school samples, throws them into a blender with some jazzy vibes and hypnotic beats, and somehow makes it perfect for getting stuff done. While you're on a call that you're pretending to be engaged on Fun Fact: Turns out your brain actually loves this stuff!
