One of my motivations for migrating my writing to Substack was a desire for excellence. I didn’t want to fall into the trap of just ‘producing content.’ The personal development market is increasingly condensed into inspirational quotes, social media friendly posts and other surface level content. This is in contrast with what any good personal development plan needs; a willingness to work at depth and an investment of time. To reduce my ideas and what I write to soundbites would put me in direct conflict with what I believe and the advice I give clients. I would rather invest the time each month thinking about, researching, and writing about topics that matter in the manner I believe is most impactful. This is far less s€xy and harder to package than ‘ten weeks to your best life’ but it is more truthful. I am not simply producing something but building a body of work I believe in and care about. If you happen to type ‘masculinities’ in its plural form, Google Drive’s autocorrect features may suggest changing it to ‘masculinity’ in the singular. But is masculinity truly a singular, static concept? Robert Lawson’s (2023) recent book, 'Language and Mediated Masculinities: Cultures, Contexts, Constraints', paints a different and more dynamic picture, showing how masculinity evolves into an ongoing, multidimensional concept. I loved reviewing this volume for the Discourse Studies journal. Hands down, one of the best linguistics books I've ever read. And just to be clear, I'm saying this as a student seeking role models, not some expert. This book is crystal-clear and engaging, masterfully showcasing the complexity of masculinitIES through a wide range of research. My favorite part? Although I didn't discuss it in my book review, I would say the positionality statement ("Who am I to write this book?")— it's so sincere, it feels like you're chatting with the author. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in gender studies and/or discourse analysis (or both). And, for what it's worth, I thank the author for making me think, learn, and even laugh! Book review ?? https://lnkd.in/dtT3djdF On ResearchGate ?? https://lnkd.in/dnqsY5JQ PS: Yeah, my LinkedIn profile and CV are a bit all over the place -multimodality, discourse studies, postcoloniality, and DEI... But that's just me! I'm a mix of all these things and I'm still figuring out how, if, and to what extent they all fit together. It's a work in progress. #Discourse #DiscourseStudies #Masculinity #Gender Sage

Wonder Thought of the Day : How many times do the current generation (in 20s,30s) thank their stars for the #Goldmine collections of Old Interviews of still famous personalities across Genres. Try to catch #candid #honest confessions in depth video conversations of famous authors, poets, writers recorded in the era of 1980s, 90s. I say video because it tends to catch many off guard moments to know the truth & study, discuss the depth of the same. This will give you how right, wrong their decisions were & learn from them. Also try to find correlation in their ideas where we have gone corrupted & where have we enriched. A few cents from me, gone wrong : Moral, value system, human etiquettes, basic consideration/respect for others Gone right : Becoming more fearless, uninhibited, More perspectives across globe/genres, quick fact check Will keep adding! ?? ?? So proud to say my first essay, "Principle I: The Arbitrary Nature of the Sign," has been published with Southeast Review! The fact that this piece about my navigating gender and language as a child was accepted by the literary magazine of a Florida university feels in many ways immense. Our values help guide our goals Values can come in the form of excellence, integrity, hard work, social justice, etc. A simple way in which we can affirm ourselves is by writing about our values. In a study in 2006, authors found that a simple act of writing about their values led to academic performance gains for minority students. The authors concluded that this was done because of an increase in the individuals' self-integrity. This intervention has since then been replicated in different settings, and the results tell us that thinking and writing about our values is a simple yet effective way to enhance our self-belief. #EmployersWhoCare #SelfBelief #Values #Integrity #Kindness #Excellence #Affirm #Strength #EmotionalWellness

Long post, and not work related.?Not necessarily. There was a time when education sought to create well-rounded students, who could be scholars, athletes, of service to others and their community, and were also well acquainted with art and literature. Those students went on to take jobs that were specialized, but their contributions were made deeper for the full person in the role, especially if that person became a leader. This is a traditional view. And certainly this started traditionally as for males, but that extended to female students, at least in certain schools. And more recently the numbers are unambiguous, schools (especially universities) in 2024 do a better job helping women succeed. At the risk of getting political, I agree with this NYT op-ed that on the other side of the equation, the guys have regressed. We seem to be unable to choose between a spineless, weak version of manhood (“men without chests”, if you know the CS Lewis quote) and a braindead, thuggishly aggressive version that has been brewed up in response to the other. There’s less room for men that are refined, intelligent, and strong in the best sense. And there needs to be. The world is not getting less complicated or dangerous, and we are frequently fragmented and less kind to each other. With our deep and daily connection with technology, we are increasingly disconnected with history, culture, and the better parts of tradition that we might want to carry forward. Literature – along with community, family, reflection – puts the meaning of our lives in a richer context, one which social media cannot provide, and which incomplete models of manhood will never replace.

What is the Main Point of Woolf in Writing “Shakespeare's Sister”? ???In Virginia Woolf's essay "Shakespeare's Sister" the author explores the ways in which gender and social norms can limit individual freedom and creativity. The essay takes the form of a fictional narrative, in which Woolf imagines a hypothetical sister of William Shakespeare who is denied the opportunity to pursue her own creative ambitions because of the expectations of her society. The main point of Woolf in writing "Shakespeare's Sister" is to challenge readers to consider the ways in which gender and social norms can limit individual freedom and creativity, and to emphasize the importance of individuality and personal freedom in the creative process.

Written Heritage: Books as Pillars of Cultural Identity Do you often feel completely bored while at home or while travelling and wish that you had something more than social media to enlighten your mood. Well it happens with most of us and this issue can usually be solved if you happen to develop a habit of reading. A book is one such companion that you can have at all times and can rely on to never leave you not entertained. Most of us read books to escape from reality and step into different lives through the books they read. But we have never pondered upon the deep learning that we gain from simply reading books and also how it helps us shape our personalities. Reading a book is like a deep dive into different cultural identities, traditions and values. Aristotle, one of the great philosophers viewed a piece of literature as an imitation of human activity and he argued that literature provides valuable insights into the human experience. Therefore reading a book simply helps us divulge into various cultures, traditions and the people following it. Books especially written by native and local authors give a more authentic view of different cultures around the world. This not only helps in learning about your own culture but also in exploring others. Literature often reflects on the society and time periods they were written in and it just gives us immense knowledge about the social values and ethical dilemmas that define a community. It helps readers understand their cultural identity and find a sense of belonging in it. With vast globalisation it's now easier to access literature from around the world from different communities. It's always a good habit to pick books from different cultures to explore more about how people from different communities from around the world exist. It also helps to learn about lesser known or comparatively smaller communities via their literature. Authors of different communities derive stories from epic tales, traditional stories and folklore from their culture which in turn helps in conveying and preserving their beliefs in the future generations. Aristotle believed that books have the power to evoke emotions in a person. When one connects to the book it has the power to evoke many different feelings. This reading helps us shape our personalities and pushes us to identify with our own cultures. #culturaldevelopment #literature #cuturalidentity #growthinidentity #personalgrowth #books #fiction

"When we start keeping consciousness at hand, realising the clear characterisation of the presence of darkness in the surroundings, we start understanding the distortion of honour we face when dealing with minds in suffering who have embraced the cult of hate and the promotion of negativity all around. It’s quite simple to understand. Instead of experiencing suffering through direct confrontation, a person that considers themselves as a superior race, cultivating and nurturing an eager desire to harm others, replaces that confrontation by gossiping and deceiving. The goal of such a strategy is making a target person to step into a period of suffering, performing brainless actions to confront people about the gossip and deception they are both spreading and performing, which would result in such people playing dead to apply an inversion of control. Thus, the cult of hate boosts its influence, which implies clear actions to restrain and control others that can be clearly seen in the promotion of wars, armed conflicts, violations of fundamental human rights, and all atrocities described throughout history, which include the ones performed during World War II. The more we realise that, the better we understand why the majority of people live into a deep period of suffering, experiencing a huge fear to face darkness and deal with the negative conditioning we’re subjected to in the environment we’re inserted into. People actually fear the idea of being subjected to the ostracism promoted by few influential persons in society that consider themselves as a superior race than having to deal with any other type of negativity we may have contact with in the environment we’re inserted into..." #consciousness #understanding #Life #motivation #inspiring https://lnkd.in/dYTUNtre

7 个月I'm sure you will be at a very different place in 2030! Very timely reading for me, as I was told " you should never ask for a promotion" recently, and I was very proud of myself as I didn't see this as an attack on me but just a perspective from their own experience. It took me years of building up the courage to speak for myself and I won't give up.
