Heat plays a crucial role in foundation industries processes, constituting around 70% of industrial energy demand. However, much of this heat is wasted after a single use, dissipating up chimneys or down drains. Heat recovery company Futraheat, in collaboration with Projective, created a pioneering high-temperature heat pump to enable foundation industry companies to harness and utilise waste heat efficiently. With funding from the Resilient Recovery Programme, provided by UKRI’s Transforming Industries Challenge, delivered by Innovate UK, EPSRC, and ESRC: Economic and Social Research Council, the project developed a unique type of compressor, TurboClaw, which operates at reduced speeds and without oil, to reduce the cost of production, operation, and maintenance. As a result, a 300-kilowatt heat pump demonstrator was tested in an industrial factory simulator and will be developed into a commercial product. PLEUGER's Hydropower Applications Pump-as-Turbine! Pleuger has a long tradition of innovation and developing new technologies in cooperation with companies, research institutes, and universities. This also includes the utilization of the submersible motor pump in turbine operation to generate energy.? ? In Dillkreis Süd waterworks in Westerwald, Germany,?water from a storage basin is piped downhill to a waterworks. The first PLEUGER submersible motor pump installed in 2007 generates electricity, which significantly improves the energy balance of the water utility and reduces operating costs.? ? Due to the positive results, a second submersible motor pump was installed in 2013 to generate electricity as a replacement for a pressure-reducing valve at another location.? ?? The feedback we received when visiting the site in May 2023 underlines the successful approach to sustainability. Used in conjunction with the existing gas, oil-fired, LPG, electric or biomass* boiler, the EvoLink allows the end user to benefit from the highly efficient, low carbon operation of an Aerona3 heat pump to provide space heating and hot water for a large part of the year, with the boiler used only as supplementary heating during the colder periods. In warmer times, the higher outdoor temperatures reduce the heat demand of the property allowing this to be met with lower water flow temperatures in the heating system that may be met by the heat pump alone or with a contribution from the boiler.
