According to recent estimates by the federal government, Australia recently celebrated its four-millionth rooftop solar installation—a remarkable milestone for a nation of its size and population. This achievement highlights Australia's commitment to renewable energy and its widespread adoption of rooftop solar systems. In contrast, Mongolia lags significantly behind, with fewer than 1,000 rooftop solar installations in urban areas. Many nomadic families rely on small solar panels, averaging about 300 watts, to meet basic energy needs. While these panels provide essential power, they are far from the scale and efficiency of rooftop solar solutions seen in Australia. To bridge this gap, Mongolia could benefit greatly from studying Australia’s successful approach to rooftop solar adoption. Enhanced public awareness, government incentives, and collaboration with Australian experts could accelerate the deployment of solar energy solutions. Additionally, with the Mongolian government recently increasing electricity tariffs, both corporate and household customers need to understand the long-term benefits of investing in solar panels. Over time, solar energy can reduce electricity costs, improve energy independence, and contribute to a sustainable future. Of course, Mongolia's harsh winters present unique challenges, but daylight hours can still be utilized to warm homes. Furthermore, some families could consider purchasing lithium batteries, which have become more affordable due to technological advancements. For example, Australians optimize their abundant sunlight during the day to power air conditioning systems and regulate indoor temperatures. Maximising the Potential of Rooftop Solar ?? By Dr Gabrielle Kuiper | Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) Guest Contributor As Australia’s rooftop solar uptake continues to soar, it’s time to rethink how we manage and optimise the energy being produced. One key innovation – flexible exports – has the potential to nearly double solar exports, reducing costs both for individual households and for the broader electricity grid. ?? What are flexible exports? ?? Flexible exports use smart software to dynamically adjust the amount of solar power a household can send to the grid, based on real-time network capacity. This allows households to export more energy when the grid can handle it, and less when it’s at capacity, ensuring optimal grid stability. Currently, only South Australia has fully implemented this system, but delays in rolling it out nationally are costing households and the wider energy system dearly. ?? The Benefits: ?? Increased exports: With flexible exports, solar owners could double their export capacity, generating more income from their systems. ?? Lower energy costs: More solar energy on the grid reduces wholesale prices, benefiting all consumers, not just solar households. ?? Faster returns on investment: Flexible exports can significantly boost the financial returns for solar owners, especially those with larger systems (8-15kW). ?? Improved grid stability: By optimising solar export flows, we reduce network congestion and provide valuable grid support. The good news is that South Australia has already demonstrated the value of this technology, implementing it at a low cost of A$32 million. Now, it's time for other states and territories to follow suit. A rapid rule change is needed to accelerate the implementation of flexible exports across the National Electricity Market (#NEM). The current delay not only impacts consumers but also hampers Australia’s ability to maximise the potential of its clean #energytransition.
