Slow Travel in Laos: Monks, Mountains, and Mekong Moments - and a Loo with a View! Leaving behind the heat and humidity of Hanoi, I embarked on a 4-day adventure in Laos. It's been nearly 20 years since my last visit, and I’m delighted to find that Luang Prabang has retained all its charm. A small, walkable town with boutique hotels, cozy restaurants, craft shops, coffee spots, and friendly locals. Luang Prabang's rhythm is unique. It wakes up early and goes to bed early. At 5 a.m., the city is alive with locals preparing for alms-giving, a Buddhist tradition where locals offer food to monks in early morning processions as an act of respect. The monks walk through town chanting and praying, and guests are encouraged to participate by buying rice from stalls set up on the sidewalks and donating it to the monks. By 10 p.m., most restaurants and bars close down, and the city quiets down. It's slowness at its best. Yesterday, I had a fascinating conversation with Alex Chitera, a serial travel and hospitality entrepreneur based in Luang Prabang. Born and raised in France, Alex moved to Luang Prabang in 2008 to reconnect with his family roots. We discussed the future of travel in Laos, destination management, and the challenges of building businesses. Our conversation was refreshingly different from the typical VC jargon about pre-money valuations, churn rates, TAM, and SAM that I often have with travel tech founders back home. It’s truly good to be away on holiday. :-) Alex’s current ventures include boutique hotels, restaurants, cafes, and his own cruise company, Shompoo Cruises https://shompoo-cruise.com. "Shompoo" means “looking for the mountains” and thats exactly what we intend to do as we travel 300 km upstream on the Mekong River from Luang Prabang to the Thai border town of Houng Xay. It's a two-day cruise on a slow boat with an overnight stay in Pakbeng. For the next 9-10 hours, I'll be soaking in the lush scenery—endless jungle, beautiful mountains, watching local fishermen and gold miners along the riverfront. This is slow travel at its best. The Laotian lunch is freshly prepared onboard and will be served at 12 noon. And the view from the loo? Absolutely stunning :-) It’s entrepreneurs like Alex who shape the future of this unique destination. Best of luck on your journey, Alex. Thanks for creating such memorable experiences in this beautiful country. Take good care of Luang Prabang!
