Space Startups Team Up to Revolutionize Orbital Surveillance with Cost-Effective Satellite Retrofits ?? Atomos Space and Katalyst Space are teaming up to retrofit geostationary satellites with space domain awareness (SDA) sensors, which could transform how we monitor high-value space assets in GEO orbit. This collaboration comes as demand for space surveillance capabilities grows, with U.S. Space Command and commercial players seeking to enhance intelligence in the critical 22,000-mile orbit. ?? Key projects: -Atomos Space's Quark vehicle will deploy Katalyst’s Sight sensor in 2025, followed by a Shield sensor mission in 2026. -These payloads will be installed on aging telecom satellites, extending their life and improving surveillance capabilities at a fraction of the cost of new satellite builds. “Our market analysis shows around $1 billion in SDA-hosted payload opportunities over the next five years,” says Ghonhee Lee, Katalyst’s CEO. With space awareness becoming more critical for national security and satellite operators, retrofitting existing assets is a low-cost, low-risk solution to close intelligence gaps. The first wave of space dominance was propelled by SATCOM in GEO, and now the second wave of the space industry will be driven by Earth observation constellations and NGSO broadband. EO data has huge demand and various applications. With advancements in AI/ML, innovative applications are being consistently discovered. The space segment consisting of an EO constellation is a high capital expenditure project for any private industry. Therefore, IN-SPACe has proposed to realize this project under a PPP with financial support from the Government of India. The mission is planned for 2027 and is organized by the European Space Agency - ESA Agency. The main goal is to study in detail how the apparatus will fall apart, so that in the future to create easily disintegrating satellites and reduce the amount of debris in orbit. For this purpose, the washing machine-sized satellite will be equipped with 200 sensors, four cameras and an ultra-secure black box that will be able to store all the data. #archtown #spacescience
