Unlike most other engineering disciplines, power engineering is one of the rare fields where you can be WRONG for so long and never know it. Why? 1- Faults do not occur when you are still in the same job and/or company. So you don't know the flaw 2- If the fault occurs, it may not be that specific fault that exposed your weakness. So you think I got this, the design works as intended. 3—Your generator does not meet the intended design but still runs at a decent output. You think something is wrong but cannot figure it out; now, abnormal conditions have become the norm. "It is what it is." 4—If an issue occurs and you cannot explain it, you can always come up with a reasonable hypothesis: "Maybe it was a glitch, maybe the CT was saturated (although you can't prove it), maybe..." 5—If you are a designer, you never see your work six months after starting up; hence, when an issue occurs, you are already gone and have never learned from potential errors. 6—Your boss does not have an electrical background, so he/she does not understand the nitty-gritty details. Everything you said to them makes sense, however. 7- When there is an issue, the first call is to the manufacturer. Whatever they say makes sense. 8—When equipment fails, you can blame the manufacturer, and no one will question it. It makes sense; a motor fails because the rotor overheats. Hence, the manufacturer takes the blame, not our process data, which may have caused the heating issues. EEEngineering, LLC #powersystems #electrical #engineering #epassa
