SAFEGUARDING IN SPORTS DEMANDS COMMITTED LEADERSHIP. As a frontline member of the African Union Sports Council Safeguarding in Sports Working Group, and as a staff of an amazing organization as Street Child, I've had the privilege of remotely reviewing safeguarding protocols with sports academies and numerous facilities catering to children here in Africa, in countries like: Lesotho, Eswatini, Zambia, Ghana, Mauritania, Gambia, Senegal, Namibia, Central Africa République etc. My experience underscores that without visible, committed, and accountable leadership, safeguarding in sports remains an unattainable aspiration. Leaders play a pivotal role in shaping an organization's culture, and their influence should not be underestimated. As role models embodying an organization's values and behaviors, leaders are responsible for upholding the principles of safeguarding, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes, particularly children and vulnerable adults. Street Child is presently using sports and recreation to provide Mental Health and Psychosocial support to Crisis affected children in the Anglophone crisis of cameroon. ?? Safeguarding in sports is paramount, and FIS is taking a proactive step forward by developing a safeguarding toolkit for event organizers. This toolkit aims to create safer environments for athletes, volunteers, and everyone involved in events, reinforcing FIS's commitment to safety and inclusion. ??? Could your sports organisation develop a safer, healthier culture? ? If the answer is yes, then help is at hand. I’m really proud to share that I represented UNICEF UK as part of a group of experts, to develop and launch a tool designed to support the leaders of sports organisations to better understand and develop safer, healthier cultures in their organisations: https://lnkd.in/eKaK27yB ? The organisational culture survey, a key part of the tool, is free for the first 100 organisations that sign up, and anyone can access the other tools and resources for free. Developed with input from a team that it was a real privilege to work with, including experts from the Ann Craft Trust, the NSPCC, Commonwealth Sport, the International Safeguards for Children in Sport, LimeCulture Community Interest Company (CIC), Management Futures, Mission 89, and The Premier League, this practical, easy to use tool has been designed with leaders in mind. Disappointing but unsurprising to read the?Senedd’s Culture and Sport Committee’s report into the devastating impact a decade of funding cuts have had on culture. Important to note that “Wales ranks third from bottom of European countries in terms of spending per person on recreational and sporting services and second from bottom for cultural services” and I am pleased to see the clarity on the issues that the committee has presented and the key recommendations. I do hope that Welsh Government responds to the call. “The report makes several key recommendations and calls for the Welsh Government to: Increase funding; Preventative spending and Strategic support. The report underlines the importance of culture and sport in enriching lives, supporting communities, and improving physical and mental well-being. It calls for immediate action to prevent further deterioration in these vital sectors.” https://lnkd.in/eAAEsH2e

?? #BESSTProject: Effecting Safeguarding in European Sport ?? The Building European Safe Sport Together project, funded by the #Erasmus+, has developed vital resources to help European sports organizations in the implementation of effective safeguarding practices. Led by a consortium of seven organizations, including the #NOC of the Netherlands???? and Slovenia????, the project was recently discussed at the #EOC Seminar in Budva, Montenegro??. Aligned with the EOC’s mission to foster #safe, #equal, and #inclusive environments for athletes and to fulfill their potential, inspiring #healthylifestyles across the continent, the BESST project offers newly-released materials based on two years of extensive research and collaboration, marking a significant step towards a safer sports environment across Europe. These resources include: ?? A modern definition of abuse and harassment in sport, introducing "#transgressivebehaviour" as a unified term to describe harmful behaviours. ?? Frameworks and toolkits for sports organizations to integrate safeguarding practices effectively within their structures and among their members. ?? Research findings highlighting the need to prioritize safeguarding measures and drive cultural change towards sport free from harmful behaviours. As highlighted by Daniela Negreda, Advisor at IGNITX, “The BESST project has resonated across Europe, emphasizing the need for accessible, practical resources that empower sports organizations to take immediate action." Soenke Schadwinkel, EOA Project Coordinator, added: “Our goal has always been to equip European sports organisations with resources that are not only informative but actionable.
