?? Exciting news! I’m thrilled to share that I am a co-author on a new paper led by Dr. Ibrahim AL Khoury, who has just successfully defended his PhD at Géosciences Environnement Toulouse! ?? Our study, titled "Evaluation of precipitation products for small karst catchment hydrological modeling in data-scarce mountainous regions" focuses on assessing the accuracy of various precipitation datasets for hydrological modeling in the Baget karst catchment in the French Pyrenees. Using the ISPEEKH model, we evaluated both gauge- and satellite-based precipitation products, along with reanalysis products like ERA5-Land, over a 12-year period. Key findings: ?? Reanalysis products outperformed gauge- and satellite-based ones in streamflow simulation. ?? Even with downscaling and dataset merging, significant streamflow underestimation occurred. ?? The study highlights the need for more rain gauge stations at different altitudes in karst catchments to improve simulation accuracy. The paper is published in the Journal of Hydrology. It is my own volunteer desktop research for high mineralized mine water impact analysis. It is based on long-term monitoring data (11 years) and includes hydrogeochemical calculations with PHREEQC. The report's draft already has over 100 pages and contains about 100 diagrams. I use R programming language and LaTeX for the final data analysis and report making. #rstats #phreeqc #latex #geochemistry #environmental #pollution

?? Paper Alert! I am proud to announce that the paper "Assessing hydrogeological hazards in the post-mining region in Saint-Vaast, Belgium: insights from three decades of SAR data and piezometric analysis", results of the second part of my PhD, has been published in the Natural Hazards Journal! This study investigated the reasons behind a natural hazard case experienced in the Saint-Vaast region, #Belgium, using PS-InSAR estimations combined with geological investigations and piezometric data. ??Results suggest a new phase of similar hazard, with rising groundwater levels and ground deformation posing potential risks to the area. This study would not have been possible without the support and collaboration of my co-authors (Pierre-Yves DECLERCQ, Benedicta Ronchi, and Xavier Devleeschouwer). The article "MODPATH-RW: A Random Walk Particle Tracking Code for Solute Transport in Heterogeneous Aquifers", recently published by Rodrigo Pérez-Illanes and Daniel Fernàndez-Garcia, has been included in the Editor's Choice of the journal Groundwater. The publication introduces a novel computer program to simulate solute transport processes through groundwater systems by means of random walk particles, improving the availability of numerical tools for solving a highly complex problem.? The program MODPATH-RW was built by extension of the USGS' particle tracking code MODPATH, and as such, is seamlessly integrated with multiple versions of the well-known groundwater flow simulator MODFLOW. HOW DO HYDROLOGIST LOCATE GROUNDWATER? (U.S. Geological Survey, 2018) ? Using Scientific Methods to Locate Water "To locate groundwater accurately and to determine the depth, quantity, and quality of the water, several techniques must be used, and a target area must be thoroughly tested and studied to identify hydrologic and geologic features important to the planning and management of the resource..." ? Locating Groundwater "Groundwater is simply the subsurface water that fully saturates pores or cracks in soils and rocks.?Aquifers are replenished by the seepage of precipitation?that falls on the land, although they can be artificially replenished by people, also. There are many geologic, meteorologic, topographic, and human factors that determine the extent and rate to which aquifers are refilled with water. The landscape offers helpful clues. Shallow groundwater is more likely to occur in larger quantities under valleys than under hills, because groundwater obeys the law of gravity and?flows downward?just as surface water does. In arid regions, the presence of "water-loving" plants is an indication of groundwater at shallow depth... . Rocks are the most valuable clues of all?consolidated formations such as sandstone, limestone, or granite as well as for loose, unconsolidated sediments such as gravel or sand. An "'aquifer" is any body of rock that contains a usable supply of water. Indeed and this case study area is really interesting in the frame of a post mining monitoring in a densely and populated district just south of La Louvière where a land subsidence bowl has been observed, monitored through time. The clear convergent observations between piezometric evolutions and SAR data shows that combining different techniques helps to monitor and follow this kind of geohazards affecting an urbanized area .. Well done to had this peer reviewed paper in the Natural Hazards journal being published ..

It's my priviledge to share the completion of a detailed Drainage Basin Delineation Map of Roma using GIS. This map is a valuable tool for water resource ministries as it allows for precise identification of optimal locations for stream gauging. Shallow areas situated immediately just before entering the Phuthiatsana River's main channel present potential locations for establishing stream gauging stations. These areas can be advantageous for discharge calculations due to: ? Confined Flow: The shallow depth concentrates the water flow, simplifying the application of standard discharge measurement techniques. ? Accessibility: Often, these shallow areas are more readily accessible for installation and maintenance of gauging equipment compared to deeper sections of the river.
