Today's job search lessons: don't stop talking about it, and don't stop moving. This morning I was frustrated. A new gig is about to start, and that's thrilling, but as a freelancer, you can't ever stop looking... [always be closing] ...and every no has the potential to take a bite out of your self-confidence. This week a freelance gig fell through, and none of the FT jobs I've applied for have reached out to me, and I was feeling it. So I tossed up an Insta story being honest about how hard it can be to stay positive when you're always hunting for new work, because you don't get the yes every time. In my story I listed all the reasons I had the blues, including all the madness that's happening in the US and the world, but I made myself quit playing the NYT word puzzles, and go exercise and get some work done, because moods are like weather, and eventually, they pass. Within 3 hours of posting that story -- on Insta, not even here -- I've received: 1. One offer from a design/ad industry peer to chat and see if anyone in her network needs any of my services 2. An inquiry from one of my kids' former teachers, asking what it is exactly that I do because her husband just got a promotion and is now in charge of advertising for his company 3. A reco from a colleague for a monthlong freelance gig, partnering with her 4. An introduction from a former coworker to a local recruiter who's currently looking for creative director-level writers 5. AND a text from another former coworker and friend who's pitching me to her current agency for a permalancer role [Edited to add that I've already heard from the recruiter from #3 above, and we're chatting tomorrow!] All that as the result of one "job searching sucks, but I'm going to get off my ass and get some stuff done" Instagram story. So don't stop talking, don't stop doing, don't stop moving, and don't stop hoping! You never know who's gonna be listening. Related: your personal brand is so important, and I don't mean your beautiful website or logo, I mean how you treat people, your work ethic, and your attitude. Great work gets you hired once. Good Afternoon everyone, how is everyone doing today? I've realized that I haven't posted on here in some time so I felt compelled to share some things that have been going on recently. For starters, as you know I am still searching for a social media/marketing role. Which of course I haven't had luck with in the past year. I have tried to continue to reach out and network but it seems that I always hit some sort of dead end. It has been discouraging for me as someone who has been graduated for a full year and a half now and hasn't found any promising career opportunities. I have tried doing some freelance things here and there but I think I've come to realize that freelance/entrepreneurship is not my path. Which I feel like is something a lot of people can admit to. Not everyone has the compacity nor the patience to become a entrepreneur or a freelancer. And I'm glad that I was able to figure that out about myself. However, trying to apply for a full-time position has not been a pleasant experience. Between going into multiple interviews, and sending in countless resumes and cover letters. On top of that having to almost over-explain why I'm qualified to do the work. But still being told that I'm not what the organization or company is looking for can become very tiring. While I knew getting a job wouldn't be easy. It has become more and more apparent to me that there is something inherently wrong with the way some of these companies are conducting their hiring process. A lot of what I have just explained has made me sad and upset at myself and a lot of it has made me almost feel like I haven't done enough to prove to people that I am capable of handling marketing and social media work. But the problem isn't me. The problem is the way a lot of these companies are conducting their processes. I won't lie and say that haven't been going through some serious depression because of this. Plus the recent passing of my uncle who raised me didn't help matters either. It is not a place where I thought I would be at age 25. I've always had lifelong dreams of making an impact and working in the entertainment, film, and television space. Not only that but creating content that people can relate to and connect with and could put a smile on people's faces or even give them an escape. But it almost seems as if those dreams are untouchable now because of not only my circumstances. But also because of the state of our world today as well. I know that eventually there will be light at the end of the tunnel but it's just really hard to see that light right now. But I do say all of this to say, try enjoying your life for what it is now. Even if it's not the life you expected for yourself. I hope that I can use the time I have now to connect with others who are working in marketing or entertainment so I can at least get my foot in the door. I'm curious: have you or anyone you know ever landed a job through LinkedIn Jobs? ?????? I'm feeling skeptical about finding work here. Every posting seems to have 100+ applicants already! ?? My job search journey so far: ? Hustling on UpWork, perfecting proposals ?? ? Researching clients, offering free samples ?? ? Charging $35-$50/hour (though I know I'm worth $100+/hour for the revenue I can generate) ?? ? Networking on LinkedIn, following up with company contacts ?? ? No luck yet, but staying positive! ?? Any employer still posting jobs for "3 to 5 years experience" right now needs to be put in a timeout. What a colossally dumb way to vet talent. Especially in the creative fields at this current moment. About six months into my first job, I watched about half of my creative department lose theirs. They were all on the wrong side of 40. These were good, solid writers and art directors who earned really nice salaries because of the work they had previously done. It was a sobering wake-up call that, for a business that claimed to prize "great work," it valued youth even more. Even then, I knew why. This pattern has played out in nearly every workplace I have been in since, and because of it, it has haunted my thoughts every day of my career. It's probably the biggest factor in why I chose to go freelance 15 years ago and start my own business rather than working full-time. I always trusted my work more than I trusted an employer who could decide at any time that I had aged out. I don't need to tell anyone that finding employment in creative fields right now is a shitshow. At least 80-90% of my friends in advertising are having trouble finding regular work, freelance or full-time. It doesn't matter if they're former Chief Creative Officers or Cannes Lions winners with 25 years of experience. There's more high-level talent on the street than there has ever been. So it makes less than zero sense why any company or agency would ever post for a job with some arbitrary number of years as a benchmark for experience. Why would you hire someone with 3-5 years of generic "experience" when you could hire, even temporarily, someone who has a 20-year track record of fantastic creative work if they were willing to take the gig? The creative field has always valued youth. Maybe it's because younger people are thought to better understand the current media environment, but it's more than likely because companies think they can pay them less over time. All you need to do is look at the holding companies' investment in AI to understand that it's about money, not creativity. At The Quills, we believe in paying writers what they're worth — more, if at all possible, regardless of their age. It might not be what they were accustomed to making before (we're all there right now), but we always offer what we can afford to pay and still keep our business running. If they're game, they take it. If they're not, they don't. But we always leave it up to them. We simply don't care how many years they've been working if their work is exceptional. I'm not sure why every agency doesn't operate this way right now, but we're more than happy to continue using the writers they're unwilling to hire because they don't fit into some neat box for experience. It's working great for us.

TGIF! Thank goodness I'm freelancing! While I hustle for my next role, I've got some exciting smaller freelance projects in various stages - I've had "are we the right fit?" calls and discussions with some clients, or I'm all in and about to meet with them so I can hit the ground running! What I love about freelance is I GET TO DO THE WORK! No one talks about this aspect of being #unemployed. I'm used to back-to-back meetings, deadlines, strategies, team coaching, relationships. Job hunting is a different kind of daily stress and hustle. Getting to exercise my capabilities sure feels a lot more rewarding than remembering all the skills I need to put in Workday job applications ?? (Don't get me wrong though - I'm happily doing it to get me closer to my next opportunity!) Being a #solopractitioner or #fractionalpr provider offers a lot of fun assignments, too. I'm speaking to clients about: ?? Social media content. ??? LinkedIn strategy and content development. ?? Copyediting. ?? Event and nonprofit PR. As January comes to a close, I'm most grateful for bringing positive energy into 2025 and approaching my job search using the lessons I learned in 2024. I always tell my kids - "you should be proud of yourself for *insert accomplishment*!" Well, I'm saying that to myself as I continue manifesting a first quarter hire for myself and continue to freelance! I'm proud of myself for persevering and persisting! Since so many freelancers are frustrated with the state of job posts on LinkedIn, I have an idea: Let’s all start actively expecting more from the people who post them. I just saw one of those posts, a creative “cattle call” if you will. Here’s how I responded. (Feel free to use this, or come up with your own version.) Hey [X]! Copywriters see a lot of these posts on LinkedIn. We reply to so many of them — taking time to write catchy messages and send our links — more often than not getting no response for our efforts. We’d love to see a better process for posts like this. It would be so helpful if you could answer a couple of questions, for all of us: - Are you hiring right away? - Do you plan on getting back to everyone who comments on this post? - What’s the duration of the gig?
