"As we progressed from junior to senior #postdocs, some of us worked slightly more, some of us slightly less, but we all experienced a significant shift in time investment in different aspects of our work. Most noticeably, as they became more senior, CZ experienced a ~3-, 4- and 6-fold increase in relative #workload associated with emails, meetings, and teaching/supervision, respectively. This extends one of the conclusions we drew from our original dataset: not only are no two postdoc jobs the same–even if they exist in the same scientific field–but postdoc job descriptions can also change over time. The daily duties of a junior postdoc can be significantly different from those of a senior postdoc, even if the person stays in the same research group..." https://lnkd.in/gEH5S5NQ Elisa Granato, PhD, Sofia J. van Moorsel, Christoph Ziegenhain

Recent discussions and studies have highlighted an unprecedented challenge facing academia: a significant proportion of researchers are leaving the field, driven by a combination of burnout, dissatisfaction, and systemic issues within academic culture. A recent report reveals that nearly 50% of researchers leave science within a decade. This statistic underscores a worrying trend, suggesting that academia is struggling to retain its talent. The reasons for these departures appear multifaceted, but recurring themes include: - Toxic Academic Culture: A prevalent issue cited by departing researchers, marked by intense competition, lack of work-life balance, and inadequate institutional support. - Burnout and "Quiet Quitting": Another report highlights the rise of "quiet quitting" in academia, where researchers mentally disengage from their roles due to exhaustion and dissatisfaction. The phrase "fed up and burnt out" encapsulates the sentiments of many who feel undervalued and overburdened. Root Causes of Discontent The attrition of researchers is linked to several systemic issues, including: Pressure to Publish: The "publish or perish" culture places immense stress on academics to continuously produce high-impact publications. Insecure Funding: Many researchers struggle with limited funding and short-term contracts, creating financial and professional instability. Overwork: The demand for extensive administrative duties, grant applications, teaching responsibilities, and research output often leaves little time for personal well-being. Inequities and Exclusion: Discrimination, bias, and a lack of diversity further alienate many individuals in academic environments. Implications for Science and Society The mass exodus of researchers could have significant consequences: - Loss of experienced professionals and institutional knowledge. - Delayed scientific breakthroughs due to reduced research capacity. - A decline in public trust in academic institutions if the issues persist without reform. Moving Forward To mitigate this trend, academia must undergo structural and cultural changes - Promoting Well-Being: Universities and research institutions should prioritize mental health support and fair workloads. - Reforming Metrics of Success: Moving beyond publication metrics to evaluate researchers holistically. - Creating Stable Career Paths: Offering secure contracts and adequate funding to ensure financial stability. - Fostering Inclusion: Building diverse and inclusive environments where all researchers feel valued and supported. https://lnkd.in/dcU7A8iG https://lnkd.in/dHtFDHHv
