??How lucky am I? After an amazing day in work I found myself reflecting. Yep I was thinking about how to solve problems and build more PowerPoint. ?? I was also thinking of all the children in care who never get to own a home, find a job, learn and achieve, have a happy family. Contribute their awesome skills to the workforce. As more businesses embrace social mobility, it's crucial not to overlook one of the most disadvantaged and vulnerable groups in our communities—children in care. This group faces countless challenges, with fewer opportunities for education, employment, and overall life chances. As we explore new ways to drive inclusion, it’s important to recognise that care-experienced individuals are likely to become the tenth protected characteristic under the Equality Act. Here are 3 quick actions businesses can take to support this vital cause: 1?? Expand Mentorship & Work Experience Programs: Create specific opportunities for care-experienced young people, giving them guidance and access to real-world experience that can open doors. 2?? Raise Awareness Internally: Educate your teams about the unique challenges faced by children in care. Fostering a culture of empathy can make a world of difference. 3?? Review Your Recruitment Processes: Ensure your hiring practices are inclusive, and remove any barriers care leavers may face when applying for roles, such as prior experience requirements. Phrases we should be actively eliminating from our vocabulary this Mother's Day...?? ?????? "MOTHER'S HELPER" - Do mothers need help? Unequivocally yes. But... The connotation of this "job description" conveys a very specific type of domestic labor around childcare and cleaning responsibilities?and reinforces the idea that only mothers should bear the brunt of these tasks (and that anyone else performing this labor are merely "helpers.") ???? "LITTLE MOTHER" - As in the term someone recently used to describe my 9 year old niece and her gentle interactions with my newborn son. Is she the one?most enamored with the newest member of the "cousin crew?" Decidedly so. But... What is this conditioning her to believe about our societal?norms??What is this message teaching her about the fact?that she receives praise and encouragement for specific "motherly"?behaviors? How does this inform?her thoughts about?what she can aspire to?be when she grows up? And more importantly or to the point, why does our society not recognize the?phrase "little father?"?Are fathers not?capable of empathetic and gentle enough?parenting to warrant their own terminology? Let our gift to our #mothers this year be a more equitable and egalitarian?vocabulary when it comes to #DomesticLabor, #Childcare?and the #DivisonOfLabor in our households. Touch of Love Outreach’s Aberdeen Thrive Project begins …. Thank you ABZ Works ?????? Navigating the job market in Aberdeen, especially for us minority ethnic women, can be really tough, Isn’t it? From juggling visa restrictions that limit our access to public funds to facing real challenges in the hiring process - it feels like the deck is often stacked against us. It's like, not only do we need to prove our skills and qualifications, but we also have to overcome extra hurdles related to our backgrounds and sometimes even our names on applications. But here’s some hopeful news: Touch of Love’s Aberdeen Thrive Project, funded by ABZ Works, is stepping up to help women like us. Whether you're returning to work after a break, changing careers, or just starting out, Aberdeen Thrive Peoject is offering a helping hand right at the weekly FoodBank sessions. Imagine getting professional help with your CV, or someone guiding you through job searches and even helping you pick up new skills—right in your neighborhood! And the best part? These helpful sessions are held every Thursday from 10 am to 12 noon at Tullos Community Centre, located on Girdleness Road, AB11 8FJ with childcare sessions provided. It’s really a game-changer because it means that support and opportunities are coming directly to us, making things a little easier and a lot more hopeful. So, if you or someone you know could use this kind of support, definitely check it out. It's about taking these opportunities seriously, even if they're free, because they’ve been designed just for us, with lots of hard work behind the scenes to make them available. It is Friday, July 12th 2024. Over a year after being terminated, for speaking up against a toxic work environment. My green banner is still flying high, despite the negative wrap it gets. I am Open to Work, I am open to contribute my 2 decades worth of skill to a collaborative team, and am looking for something long term, and passion aligned. Outside of my administrative prowess, operational knowledge, and project management skills, I am also a Doula, I am also a grieving care giver, and a special needs parent. My passions all point to equality in care, reproductive justice, inclusion, and defeating racism in every way honestly because, I have lived a life of inequality of care, reproductive injustice and mistreatment and blatant and covert racism, so I know it's all real and not just hashtags. I have been advised to remove my passion work from my resume and Linkedin account and focus on my functional skills. However, I think my passions are my skills. At the ripe old age of 38, I honestly have no desire to work in any space that doesn't allow all of me. I am sure that could be limiting my job search, but I don't care. I want to wake up everyday and know that my work is making a change for marginalized communities. I want to see the difference my work makes for future generations.
