Amazon's Prime Day is kicking off tomorrow and they just launched a new AI chatbot, Rufus, to assist with shopping. Unfortunately, even though Rufus is trained on Amazon's entire product catalog, I just confirmed through trial and error that one piece of data Rufus isn't allowed to use is price! To me, there are clearly two things an AI bot should do to enhance the shopping experience: (1) give me advice about the products I need, and (2) help me find the least expensive version of the product I need. Rufus doesn't do # 2! This is a perfect example of a company putting their profits over their customers. Amazon.com has always been a product discovery platform that is hugely search led. Here 90% of the customers head on to the search bar not just to discover a product but also do a huge amount of research to understand which product the right fit against their need. When Amazon first introduced customer reviews, critics told Jeff Bezos that he didn't understand his business. After all, why would he want to publicize negative sentiments about a product he was trying to sell. Jeff responded to critics with the following comment - "And when I read that letter, I thought, we don't make money when we sell things.??We make money when we help customers make purchase decisions." Well Amazon is at it again with Rufus, its new generative AI-powered chatbot. It's a great application of how AI can be used to enhance the customer shopping experience now and help them to make better purchase decisions. Think about shopping for a bluetooth keyboard for your iPad on the Amazon app. There are tons of options to choose from, but which one would be right for you. You'd have a lot of questions you'd like to ask, but currently you'd have to search through the product detail pages for several of those options before you could get the answers you need. In fact, you've probably had this experience with a variety of products you shopped for on Amazon. Now with Rufus, you can ask those questions in conversational language and the chatbot will return answers that take into account info from Amazon's product catalog, customer reviews, community Q&A, and the web. It also allows follow-up questions that retain the context of the original question and then provides contextually relevant answers.
