I worked on placing an entry-level commercial service role recently. I rarely work on entry level stuff, most of what I do is experienced insurance professionals. I forgot how much we as insurance professionals speak a different language! Before being able to share an opportunity, I had to take a step back and explain the industry, what we do within the independent agency system, the various roles that exist, and how they all intertwine. I started by asking, "What's your favorite restaurant?" and then used that to illustrate all the products/services/people that make the insurance come together for that business. I also had to explain how this path is different than the cringeworthy door to door sales calls with a briefcase trying sell to senior citizens they've seen in the movies. ?? Insurance offers such an awesome career path - so many options for so many different personality types and skill sets. I loved the opportunity to paint the picture for a newbie and share the breadth of opportunities that are available! Don't underestimate your ability as a seasoned professional to "paint the picture" of the awesome career path our industry can afford. You don’t need a nice title when you’re aligned. Here’s what I mean: Titles are a way to find you. An attachment to yours can be dangerous. Years ago in my insurance career, I wasn’t aligned: → I chased promotions. → I said ‘yes’ to mindless work. → I struggled to find real satisfaction. I got in a vicious cycle. And didn’t know why the same situations found me. After 10+ years in the industry, now: → I focus on things that matter to me. → I lean into work supporting my strengths.?? → I realize financial rewards don’t equate to fulfillment. The same applies to your career: If you’re jumping into roles…? But you still find yourself dissatisfied…?? Evaluate how aligned you are before you proceed. I promise you, it will save you so much time. If there’s one thing I’ve learned: Alignment first (get the full picture) Strategy second (pursue once aligned) Today, WOC in insurance get it wrong: They pursue first, without clarity. And alignment is barely a thought. They sit unfulfilled in roles for years. ? But remember, you’re more than a title. So ask yourself: Am I truly aligned in my role right now?
