Girls in Tech is shutting its doors. That's two #womenintech-supporting nonprofits in a matter of months. This devastating news follows their June announcement that closure was imminent if they did not raise the requisite $100,000. Girls in Tech had 130,000 members across 38 countries and 50 states. I'm just doing the maths here. ? The question may be - what can WE do about it? The answers are - ?? Don't just talk about caring about diversity in technology ?? Fund it ?? If you benefited from a nonprofit ? Pay it forward - volunteer, coach others, give your time (and fund it) ?? If you REALLY want to build diverse teams and showcase your dedication to the future of technology ?? Collaborate with them ?? Working alongside tech and cybersecurity nonprofits is such a missed opportunity for quality talent pipelining. ?? And the time for performative 'allyship' is over. Launched The Nexter Project, empowering children from underserved communities with ICT and cybersecurity skills ? Selected for School of Politics, Policy and Governance (SPPG) Class of 2025 ? Mentored the next generation of women in cybersecurity through CyberGirls ? I'm incredibly excited to connect with women and underrepresented groups in tech, all eager to learn, attend briefings, and dive into hands-on workshops. This experience is part of my own career transition journey into cybersecurity training and education. I'm inspired by my mother's path – she pivoted from agriculture journalism in Guyana to education in the U.S. after volunteering with an inner-city program, where high school students were graduating and barely knew how to read. This sparked her interest and her life's work in education. My "aha!" moment came from coffee chats with those seeking advice in IT/Cybersecurity. Their need sparked a desire in me to help others find their way. When I started in IT, the supportive communities and resources that exist today were scarce. I learned through trial and error, and now, in this new chapter, I want to be a resource for anyone interested in IT and Cybersecurity who might feel lost or unsure of where to begin. Exciting news from Carleton University in #cybersecurity innovation! ??? Dr. Masoud Barati and Dr. Nafiseh Kahani have been awarded $88,800 by the National Cybersecurity Consortium | Consortium national pour la cybersécurité (NCC) to spearhead a new project that addresses the unique privacy needs of children online. The team's framework will help protect personal data within Large Language Models (LLM)-based platforms, like search engines and online games. By integrating Canadian regulations and international best practices, this real-time monitoring tool will set a new standard for children's online safety in Canada. Drs. Barati and Kahani join 37 other projects funded by the NCC across academia, private industry, and the non-profit sector.
