How I leverage my student-athlete experience from uni in the professional world ????????! Life after graduation has consisted of some great work experience, attending legal events, and completing lots of applications in search of my next position. A question I’ve frequently faced in applications asks about my time management & organisational skills. To answer these types of questions, I’ve often relied on the busy Easter holiday I had during my final year, where I balanced an insight week at Penningtons Manches Cooper LLP, finalising my dissertation and other coursework, and a small training camp with my team ahead of our annual varsity match. As you can imagine, my schedule was packed, but I organised my time well with the help of habits like time blocking and making schedules. The end result was a vacation scheme offer, excellent grades across my coursework and a goal in the varsity match (we lost on pens though...??). You pick up many transferable skills as a student-athlete that are helpful in other areas of life – this is why I always encourage friends to continue playing their sport at uni. What My Daughter's Journey to the AAU Junior Olympics Taught Me About Workplace Excellence This weekend, my 11-year-old daughter is headed to the AAU Junior Olympics in North Carolina. ?? She's been training tirelessly, putting in 10 hour days to prepare for this moment. Watching her dedication and commitment has been inspiring and has led me to reflect on how the lessons she's learned can be applied in the workplace. Dedication: Just as athletes commit to rigorous training schedules, employees who dedicate themselves to their roles bring about exceptional results. Consistent effort and perseverance are key to achieving our professional goals. ?? Resilience: There are ups and downs in both sports and work. (I still remember my daughter's first competition when she got 3rd place and had a meltdown!) Learning to bounce back from setbacks, maintaining a positive attitude, and staying focused on long-term goals are essential for both athletes and professionals. ?? Time Management: Balancing school, training, Girl Scouts and her personal life has taught my daughter the importance of managing her time effectively. Hear more about her experience below. ?? ??: What did you study at home/what was your career? ??: Sport and Exercise Science. My career is in aquatics. ??: What phase has been your favorite so far/what phase are you most looking forward to on your training plan? ??: I am most looking forward to the fall season where I can experience outdoor education. ??: Favorite thing about being at camp year round? ??: I love watching the seasons change and being able to experience a completely environment to the summer. We get a lot of snowfall in Putnam County, NY and I’m looking forward to seeing it all! I also love having different groups of school / camp kids come through for outdoor education. When giving lessons it’s really cool to discuss our different cultures and share with them what it’s like in our home countries. ??: What was the embassy interview process like to get your 18 month visa? ??: It was such a simple process, you’re given clear directions on what is required of you and as long as you know you’re training plan well and provide all the documentation it’ll go smooth. ??: Favorite thing to do in the evenings weekend on your 18 month traineeship? ??: On the weekends my friends and I are adventure seekers, so we love to visit cities and townships nearby. Places close by that I’ll be [going to are] Catskills mountains, Philadelphia, Boston and Buffalo. ??: What holiday are you most excited to experience while in the US during your 18 month traineeship and why? ??: I’m so excited to have Thanksgiving. We don’t have anything like it in NZL so to be with an American family when it’s cold out, having new types of food is going to such an experience.
