There is no building, area of public realm or city in the world that hasn’t been shaped and influenced by engineers, architects, designers or planners. To mark International Women in Engineering Day (INWED) from Women's Engineering Society, meet women across Buro Happold who are making their mark on the built environment through the work that they do. Enter Alice Shay, Somto Uyanna EIT, ENV SP and Sydney Holgado, three women in our New York office who are making a substantive difference in the city they call home. They work in our cities team in the United States, offering an increasingly integrated service, thinking how buildings and the spaces around them can work in harmony to create a great place to live and work. Here, they speak about recent projects in New York, including the ‘EJNYC report and mapping tool’, and the ‘Green economy action plan”. “I love working with our team. I love how passionate the group is collectively around taking on paradigm shift challenges and issues that are facing our world and our cities today.” Alice Shay, principal and regional discipline leader, cities. Strong women don't break barriers, they build bridges - because they know that strength lies not in demolition, but in design. They don't just shatter glass ceilings, they construct new frameworks for success. So, let's not just be trailblazers, let's be architects of change - building bridges that connect, empower, and inspire. #womenempowerment #bridgebuilders #architectsOfChange

AJC is proud to be a member of the Champions of Change Architecture Group and to contribute to Equity By Design. This resource provides a structured approach to embedding equity into design decisions. Anchored in the 7 Switches framework, it empowers design and decision-makers to challenge norms, check for bias, and integrate equity, diversity, and inclusion at every stage of project development. We’re thrilled to feature our Coogee Surf Life Saving Club (SLSC) and Eungai Creek Campus projects, demonstrating how thoughtful design can foster dignity and empower all communities. ?? #EquityByDesign #InclusiveArchitecture #AJCArchitects

Diversity Fuels Innovation ?? During our recent panels at UK Construction Week we spoke a lot about how diversity, specifically diversity of thought, has been proven to be financially beneficial to your business. When teams are made up of individuals with different perspectives, experiences, and ideas, it unlocks creativity and solutions we never thought possible. The magic happens when diverse minds collaborate, sparking fresh approaches that make a real impact. In an ever-evolving industry, it’s this inclusive mindset that sets us apart and drives meaningful progress. Together, we can build something truly remarkable. ??? #DiversityOfThought #InclusiveInnovation #DesignAndBuild #BuildingTogether #CreativityInConstruction

Social Mobility Day We all have a role in creating a more equitable society where everyone can succeed, regardless of their background. Social Mobility Day is about raising awareness and taking action—values that should permeate everything we do. In construction design, we have a unique opportunity to enhance social mobility by creating inclusive, accessible, and affordable environments, buildings, and structures. At INVVU, our work emphasises accessible design, including public spaces, travel and community hubs, sustainable infrastructure, educational facilities, and much more. We employ universal design principles to meet diverse needs and ensure equal access for all. Thoughtful construction design fosters equitable communities, paving the way for enhanced social mobility and a more just society. #SocialMobility #Equality #Construction #DesigningEquity #ThoughtfulDesign

Recently, as part of Stantec’s urban design team, I was invited to participate in Design West’s Shape my City event -?a “talent accelerator programme for 15-18 year olds that seeks to change the future workforce across the built environment”. For me, it was enlightening to meet such young people thinking critically about their urban environment, and in particular the challenges of balancing the needs of people with the needs of nature. To be honest, I had some preconceptions that they might care mostly about nature and be a bit anti-development, but I was happily wrong. Many seemed to just ‘get’ that we needed to build homes and places for people, and that higher density, walkable, residential developments help fit more people into a city whilst protecting the countryside. … I’ve often thought that many people employed in Planning and Design, myself included, are greatly influenced by deeply personal values we learned long ago, as children. Values that relate to where and how we grew up, but which continue to influence what we think is “right, good and proper” today.?And naturally these values inform our daily judgements of what we believe other people expect and deserve from the places we plan and design for them. But are we getting it right? Any future workforce that includes a more socially representative demographic is bound to bring broader, better insights into how the sustainable communities of the near future can really be designed to meet the needs of all;?kudos to Design West for taking steps to inspire a broader group of young people and instigate this change, and for inviting people like me to come along and challenge ourselves now.
