Young people today are optimistic and eager to make a difference. Our latest youth voice survey, featured on Parents.com, reveals that 4 in 5 teens believe they'll reach their life goals. They know what they want for their future and are ready to work for it.? What's particularly inspiring is that today's youth recognize that school alone can't provide every essential life skill they want to master. They strongly believe out-of-school programs like 4-H help equip them with crucial abilities like stress management, communication, and resilience. This combination of skills sets them up for lifelong success. The recent Parliamentary inquiry into Australia's COVID-19 response, released this week, confirms what we already knew. Lockdowns and school closures had a devastating impact on children's mental health and wellbeing, affecting their development and learning, and at a crucial stage. This also exposed and deepened the wellbeing cracks that were forming prior to the pandemic - kids facing disadvantage, already twice as likely to struggle, were hit particularly hard. ? Schools Plus has proven solutions to address the growing issue of children’s wellbeing - including "Wellbeing Navigators" in schools and "School Wellbeing Hubs”, so that children get the right support at the right time, no matter their circumstances.? ? By partnering with government, philanthropists and key stakeholders in education, we are working to roll out these solutions across the country to ensure every child gets every opportunity. ? If your child is having difficulties in a mainstream school and feeling frustrated or unsettled, here are some steps you can take to help support them: 1. Communicate with Teachers Start by discussing your concerns with your child's teachers and the school's special educational needs coordinator (SENCO). They can provide insights into your child's behaviour in school and help identify any specific challenges. 2. Request an Assessment If you feel that your child's needs are not being met, you can request an assessment for an Education, Health, and Care Plan (EHCP). This plan outlines your child’s needs and the support required to help them thrive in an educational setting. 3. Explore Specialist Schools: Research specialist schools that focus on your child's specific needs. These schools offer tailored provisions and a nurturing environment where your child can learn alongside peers with similar profiles (*this is something which I specialise in, message me! ??) 4. Seek Independent Advice: Look for an independent educational consultant who specialise in special educational needs. They can provide guidance on school options, the EHCP process, and strategies to advocate for your child’s needs. 5. Support at Home: Create a supportive home environment by encouraging open communication. Help your child express their feelings and frustrations, and consider ways to manage stress and anxiety. 6. Involve Professionals: Engage with healthcare professionals; therapists or psychologists, who can provide additional support tailored to your child’s needs. 7. Stay Informed: Educate yourself about your child’s specific needs and the available resources. Understanding their condition can help you advocate effectively for the right support. 8. Build a Support Network: Connect with other parents who have children with similar needs. Sharing experiences and advice can be incredibly valuable as you navigate this journey. Collaborating for Our Youth: BBBSNWO Meets with TABSE Last week, I had the privilege of meeting with members of the Toledo Alliance of Black School Educators (TABSE), a nonprofit dedicated to promoting and facilitating quality education for all students, particularly those of African descent, and their guest, Representative Elgin Rogers. Our productive discussion explored exciting opportunities for collaboration between TABSE and Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northwest Ohio (BBBSNWO). One of our key focus areas was addressing the teacher shortage, a challenge impacting education nationwide. Together, we brainstormed innovative recruitment techniques to bring more educators into classrooms, particularly those who reflect the diversity of our communities. We also addressed the critical need to support our youth as they navigate the lingering impacts of COVID-19. Research underscores the challenges young people face: 1?? A report from the CDC highlights increased rates of anxiety and depression among youth during the pandemic. They note that school closures and social isolation have had profound effects on mental health. (Source: CDC, 2022) 2?? UNICEF's report emphasizes the long-term impacts of disrupted education and recommends enhancing mental health support and fostering a sense of belonging for students. (Source: UNICEF, 2021) At BBBSNWO, we're meeting these challenges head-on. We've expanded our knowledge and skills in trauma-informed care and Social-Emotional Learning(SEL). These tools allow us to understand better and respond to the needs of young people experiencing trauma. By integrating SEL into our mentoring programs, we're fostering resilience, emotional regulation, and positive relationships in the lives of the youth we serve. Partnerships like the one we're building with TABSE are vital to ensuring every child has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of the obstacles they face. I'm inspired by TABSE's commitment to educational equity and look forward to the impactful work we can do together.
