Yesterday, Nicole Deen, ARACY's Lead for Capacity Building, had the pleasure of facilitating a workshop on The Common Approach - an ARACY initiative, with a group of school-based youth workers, social workers and psychologists in Goodna, in Brisbane’s west. Organised by the Queensland Department of Education, the day focused on putting the theory participants had learned in the online training modules into practice. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm of participants to use the four practices of The Common Approach: ? being child-centred, ? strengths-based, ? collaborative and ? taking a holistic view of wellbeing and have a common language to describe the ways they often work instinctively. Some early feedback from participants showed the value of participating in the workshop: ? 80% said the training was extremely relevant to the work they do ? 93% said it would enhance their work with young people significantly ? 100% said they would recommend the training to others For these practitioners, who play such a vital wellbeing role in schools looking out for all children, and especially those who may be slipping through the cracks, it was a great chance for them to come together, share their own experiences and come up with new ideas of how they might share and use The Common Approach in their work from now on. Some ideas they shared were holding afternoon teas for parents to share The Common Approach with them, hosting breakfast clubs and informal sporting activities with children, incorporating wellbeing discussions in Prep orientations and incorporating the wellbeing domains of The Nest in enrolment forms. This is on top of just using the practices in the everyday conversations they have with children! The Common Approach is designed to enable anyone who works with or cares for children to take a holistic view of children’s wellbeing, and to ensure that they are able to thrive in each area of their lives. The participants in yesterday’s workshop showed the power and value of coming together to do just that and we thank them for their commitment and the difference they’re making in kids’ lives.
